Radiance of the Seas - what is it about this ship?
The Radiance of the Seas seems to have a very loyal following.
I do admit it's a beautiful ship, though we've only sailed it once, and it was a very memorable voyage.
What is it about the Radiance that has won her such a following? Blizzard? GolfMike? Can you all tell us what it is about this ship that you like so much?
MT -
From Miami or Ft Lauderdale part of the year.
It also does Alaska and Hawaii at other times, though.
It really is a beautiful ship.
GolfMike sails on it almost exclusively.
AND it used to call at Roatan.
We were onboard the very last time she called there, in April of 2004.
I will be on it next year but have been on her sister..........the Brilliance of the Seas........
To me it is the ship design.............a lot of public area's.........a lot of passengers but it doesn't seem like a lot of passengers..........of course I'm assuming all Radiance Class ships are the same........maybe I should wait for Mike or John
And we'll be on another of her sisters, the Serenade, in November.
We really DID like the Radiance.
But I'd still like to know what folks like Mike (who hardly sails on any other ship), and John (who has sailed the Radiance something like 5 times) see in her that keeps them coming back so often.
Maybe it's just something like us and the Sovereign... she's our 'favorite pair of comfortable shoes' that it always feels good to slip into.
I am not sure if I can express what it is about the ship that makes it so special. We have sailed on 28 different cruise ships that were built between about 1955 and 2002. Many of them converted to cruising, Some built for cruising. Of all the ships, the Radiance of the Seas has been our favorite.
In 2001 we booked a coastal cruise on the Radiance from Ensenada to Seattle. It would be voyage #2 for the ship after the Panama Canal. After searching around several cruise boards, I connected with about 30 others that were going on the cruise. Since the ship was new there was very little information available on it. We found pictures of the ship in the shipyard and were exchanging any information we could find. We were really looking forward to sailing on a new ship. It would be our first time with a balcony.
Many of the modern cruise ships are large barges with hotels on them.
The Radiance looks and feels like a ship. The passenger flow is good. I have never felt crowed on the ship. The Colony Club area is designed as several small areas that become a larger area. The Schooner Bar is wonderful with a hint of a smell of gunpowder. The Seaview Cafe puts JR to shame. The Atrium is awsome, with deck after deck of balconies overhead. At the top you can stand on a glass floor and look down.
enough rambling for now

I am looking forward to being able to make a first hand comparison of the Radiance and the Serenade.
I would be interested in seeing that. I have only been on the Radiance but have been looking at her sisters
