I even bought a 17 inch rather than a 19 inch TV because the 19 inch would not fit in the car when I did my moves. The 17 inch did. It was funny, the salesman kept trying to convince me to go with the 19 since it was the same price.
Well maybe not quite that judicious!

$200 for 20 hours.....not that's a deal......unless it takes her that long to get the house clean.

SAN FRANCISCO: Air Quality Management Ready To Monitor Air For Radioactive Particles - Video - KTVU San Francisco
Janice, do you work for Air Quality or did you mean you work at that building? If it's AQ, I guess you'd be one of the first to know if any radiation made it to North America. keep us posted!

Here's the latest from our CEO:

    Dear staff,

I want to update District employees about the ongoing concern over the Japanese nuclear power plant situation and the District’s role in radiation detection.

The Air District operates a radiation monitor on the roof of our building that is part of the EPA’s RadNet network. This monitor can measure slight changes in radioactive levels. It has been on the roof for the past 4 years. This monitor provides continuous measurements of radiation and this data is sent real-time to the EPA’s National Air and Radiation Environmental Laboratory in Montgomery, Alabama. This monitor also collects data on filters and the Air District sends these filters to the Alabama laboratory for additional analysis.

To date the measurements are within background levels. We agree with the US EPA, and the Federal Nuclear Regulatory Commission that there are no harmful levels of radiation expected to reach the United States. Below is a link to the NRC’s press release.
    http://pbadupws.nrc.gov/docs/ML1107/ML110720002.pdf

The Air District further agrees with the California Department of Public Health and the US Department of Health and Human Services that urges the public not to take potassium iodide tablets as it is not necessary given the current circumstances and can cause a danger to people with thyroid problems or certain allergies. Below is the link to the California Department of Public Health press release regarding potassium iodide. http://www.cdph.ca.gov/Pages/CDPHCalEMAstatementMarch152011.aspx

Our Technical Services Division will continue to answer media questions and observe readings from the rooftop monitor. We are staying in close contact with the US EPA and information coming from the NRC, California Department of Public Health and other experts in this area. We are in the process of updating the information we posted on our website. And we will inform staff if the situation changes or new information becomes available.

I know many of you are getting questions about this situation from relatives, neighbors and friends. Please feel free to share this information and direct them to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, U.S. EPA, Department of Health and Human Services or California Department of Public Health for more in depth information.

    Thank you,

    Jack Broadbent

    Friends

Now that the academy awards are over, the best film I saw last year is the "girl with the dragon tattoo". A wonderful thriller, in Swedish with English subtitles. Best actress Noomy Rapace who plays the title role. This film is available on DVD.

Martha, happy Anniversary. Looks like you had a great celebration with special dishes.

Janice, Thanks for the letter on radiation. there was a radiation specialist on CNN and he asserted that Japan is too far for the USA to have any radiation issues.

In the Cleveland area the housing prices did not go up in the good times but they went down last few years. We have lived in this house since 1989 and we will be lucky to sell it at 20% above our buy price. This for a 3800 square foot in an affluent suburb with excellent school system. Ten years in a row this system was in Newsweeks top 100 USA schools but the housing market is very weak in Ohio.

    Hanna, welcome back.

    TGIF!

Janice, thanks for sharing the letter. I know that people hear the word "radiation" and get very worried.

Kumar, I haven't seen it yet, but I heard of that movie. They're making a release in English to come out in Dec 2011. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is the first in a series, there are two more that are said to be very good, The Girl Who Played With Fire and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest.

I'm sorry about the housing market in your area Were you hoping to move?

We were lucky enough to have moved while our market was just starting on the decline. We bought our old house in 1988 and did make a decent amount of money on it when we sold, but we put quite a bit of money into the house with our rehab projects over the 21 years we lived there. At our new house the value has increased from when we purchased it, but that's only because of the money we've put into it with remodeling the kitchen and other projects.
