When we went to Progreso, May 07, we ended up taking the local bus from there to Merida.
The tours on the ships were about $70 for the same thing we did for $9 for 4. Honest. The local bus stop is about 2 blocks from the main shopping area. We don't speak Spanish, but managed to get our bus tickets and off we went. At first we thought it was $9 pp each way, but when they handed us the tickets, it was $9 round trip for 4 of us. The bus ride to Merida was almost an hour. It was an older bus, but it had a/c and curtains to block the sun. We were the only ones on it that weren't locals.
We got to Merida and started walking around. We saw some great architecture. A cathedral which we could only view from the outside, we were told, is the oldest in the Americas, built in 1542. We saw the governors mansion which in itself was quite impressive.
We spent approximately 3 hours just touring around by ourselves. We bought a couple of bottles of water and some asperina(aspirin), a couple of pastries all for a total of about $8.
It was a lovely afternoon and I would do it again. The price was right!

Boy, is that pier in Progresso looooooooooooooooooooooooooong.

From where the ship docks, the shore and town are awaaaaaaaaaaay off in the distance... the buildings just little specs.

It's a good thing they run busses to get you down the length of the pier... it's not something to walk in that sun!

Sheila, I would bet they wouldn't even allow a walker on it. I know we certainly didn't see anyone. Must have been a couple of miles long.

I seem to recall someone telling me it was THREE MILES LONG, or close to it. I also seem to recall that it is the longest pier in any cruise port worldwide.

Now - I wouldn't swear to either of the above statements, but it wouldn't surprise me if they were verified... that is one LONG sucker!

I think I've seen anything from 3-5 miles but who knows? It's a ways...

Look how tee-tiny those big ships look in the above picture.

Does the ship dock that far away on the dock? Do you have to walk that far?
