    Grand Princess Nov 8 2010

Back from the Caribbean aboard Grand Princess. I shall attempt to do a cruise report with pictures here. Of course, I shall also do a review.

Awesome, I can't wait to read about it
Some people try to turn back their odometers. Not me! I want people to know why I look this way. I've traveled a long way, and some of the roads weren't paved.

On Nov 6, we drove to San Francisco to catch our plane to Ft Lauderdale. We opted to book a Best Western in Millbrae, El Rancho Inn. They keep your car for up to 14 days at no charge and $5 per day thereafter. Our flight was at noon that day and our return flight would arrive at 10pm. We booked our room for the return part of the trip. They shuttled us to the airport(no charge). Our plane left on time and off we went. First stop, Denver. After that, Ft Lauderdale. We arrived in Ft Lauderdale at 10pm. We had booked Hampton Inn on Sheridan through bookit.com. For $63 a night, they picked us up at the airport, breakfast and shuttle to the pier. Can't beat that with a stick. No problems in getting to the hotel. Nice room, not fancy, but the beds were great.
Up the next morning and took a cab to Los Olas Blvd. We had planned on doing the water taxi all day, but the weather was overcast with possible showers, so we just opted to go shopping We had lunch at the Cheesecake Factory and had a good one Then we shopped (mostly window) shopping, but did buy a couple of things at the Tommy Bahama store. Back to the hotel about 3pm, and just lazed about for the rest of the day. Below is a picture that my DH wanted me to take of the pool area, because he liked the plants.

On Monday (the 8th), we got up too early of course. We sat by the pool with our coffee for about 2 hours. A lady came and sat with us and as it turned out, she was sailing on the Grand too. We had fun talking with her, really a nice lady, but with a name like Nancy, she would be, wouldn't she? She and her DH, Dick, were from Weekie Watchee, Fl. I think I spelled that right We boarded our transfer bus at 10:45 for the pier. It was 11:10 and our luggage was already in the bins and we were on the way to check in. No problems there, got on board by 11:45 and we were eating lunch by noon at the Horizon Court. Found our cabin and I was a little taken aback at the size of it. We are used to Jr Suites on RC, and per both web sites, the room size should be the same. Maybe it is, but the mini on the Grand is much narrower than the JS on RC. I think the cabin is longer though. We had E728 which is the furthest aft on the port side. The balcony is much longer than a normal mini balcony. The couch was a 3 seater as opposed to the 2 seater on RC. We did have 2 flat screen TV's. One in the living area, one in the bedroom area. Now mind you, they only give you one remote control. And if you turn on both tv's you don't hear the one you want to hear so well. Ah well, we didn't need 2 anyway. Here are a couple of pics of the ship and the balcony.

Hanna, maybe you did not see my few posts where I mentioned that the Mini-Suites on the Princess ships are not spacious. As you mentioned, they are narrow, but have depth and the balcony is big. We had a mini-suite on the Crown Princess, and Michelle's comment when we entered the stateroom was, "if this is a mini-suite, I wouldn't like to see a balcony stateroom".
When I was looking at the website before booking the M.Suite on the Crown, I realized it was not a spacious room. I've been in a JS on Navigator, Independence, and Liberty Of The Seas, and they are wider than those on Princess ships.
Even Carnival and the ships Carnival built for Costa have more spacious Mini-Suites than Princess ships.

KEN, I did see your posts, but when looking at their websites, the sq footage is almost equal. I think the depth is shorter on Rc and width is greater. RC usually has a 2 seater couch, whereas Princess had the 3 seater.

A few miscellaneous notes about the cabin and embarkation.
Our luggage was in our room by 2pm. Put away by 3.

The furniture: Built in desk with chair. It had 3 small drawers which I used for the unmentionables. 2 nightstands with 2 drawers each, not much storage there. The living area had the couch, 1 very small round table in front of it and 1 chair. Not much ambiance. The mini fridge had the usual drinks in it along with a container of ice, which was always replenished. The closet had 6 shelves, one of which housed the safe. The safe was very small but usable and user friendly. The closet had prox 15 hangers. Called for more. There was no curtain to divide the bedroom area from the living area. The bathroom had an open 3 shelf storage area and storage area under the sink. OF course, no top sheet on the bed, but I did call for that to be added.

Our room steward was Worabut from the Philipines. He was hardly ever seen for the entire 2 weeks and we never had a complaint.

Our balcony measured approx 7ft x15ft at the shortest end and at the long end the length was approx 19ft. This was measured by me putting one foot in front of the other.

The proverbial fire drill was held at 4:15 and we only had to go the the Vista Lounge for that. It was well done and not at all crowded.

We had opted for early dining. Our table was C243 in Boticelli dining room. How very convenient for us! Walk down two floors and we were there. Took all of maybe 2 minutes.
Our first dinner and the table for 8 was full. We had Ralph and Dolly from Arizona, Art and Joyce from So. Cal and Lillian and Roscoe from Orlando.
I had primerib and it was very good as was the horseradish. Dessert was flourless chocolate cake and it was also very good.

After dinner, we found the casino. Shock. That would be our normal thing to do every night from there on in. We would play a little and then do whatever, be it a show or MUTS or just talk with others. On this night we did go to MUTS to see Killers. The lips of the actors were not in sync with the words, so we didn't stay long. We ventured to Horizon Court on the way back to our cabin and had some iced tea.
Day 1 complete and it was great.

Day 2 at sea. Didn't have the best of beds, so asked our steward for an egg crate, he said he would try to find us one. It was there later. As per the rest of the cruise, we ate breakfast and or lunch in the Horizon Court. The food was normally the same, but very good. The pineapple for the whole cruise was fantastic. DH likes eggs and he said they were always very good. I liked the French toast and also the hash.

There was a meet n greet scheduled in the Skywalker lounge at 11am. The main reason I went was because the captain was invited to attend. I had a drawing of The Grand Princess done by our own G33, Harry. Harry had mailed it to me about a month before and I was intent on getting it to the captain at some point, and this would be the first try. It worked. Captain Roger Bilton and the cruise director, Billy London both came to the gathering. I was able to present the drawing to him and he was every so gracious. He said he would get in contact with Harry and thank him. Now that I'm back, I know that he did and I'm so happy for Harry.
