Do you remember when? ~ Princess

Is there something that Princess used to do years ago that is no longer done and you miss?

Tell us about what you miss.

For example -- HAL no longer serves crudites at cocktail time.

I don't remember hearing the Love Boat theme on any of my (few) Princess cruises. But on my first cruise, on Carnival, I took part in tv theme song trivia. The bonus song: The Love Boat theme. We tied for first place and got our own solid gold-plated ship on a stick trophy, which we proudly display in our living room.

Patty, they use to play it quite frequently throughout the cruise and ALWAYS at the Bon Voyage Party!

The Bon Voyage parties ... miss those too! Big event with streamers, balloons, horns, etc.

On Sky Princess in the casino there were a group of slot machines that played "Love Boat" each time someone was a winner!

I remember the Love Boat song -- they played it everywhere!!

Streamers -- first cruise was on Cunard and we got introduced to them. I even saved a few strands from both Cunard and Princess that are in my scrapbooks.

    • The call to dinner chimes.
    • Crepes at the champagne waterfall.
    • Flambe fruits at dinner.
    • Bottle of champagne waiting in the room.
    • Flute glasses for every cruiser in room.
    • Cruisersize exercise program with gifts.
    • Quiet at the pools without that damn MUTS blaring all the time.
    • Midnight buffet.
    • Smaller ships.
    • Dedicated movie theaters.
    • Luggage tags.
    • Comment cards handed out on the ship. (and not emailed).
    • Actual port information lectures and not the shopping infomercials presented today.
    • Better guest entertainers.
    • Sufficient room in the show lounge so the shows didn't have to be repeated the following night thereby allowing for a new guest entertainment show.
    • Normal size seats in the show lounge and not the shrunk down seats they installed on the Ruby, Crown & Emerald.
    • The better quality food that was served so I don't have to pay additional in the Specialty restaurants in order to get the same thing.
    • Drinks that they actually put a normal amount of alcohol in that you could detect.
    • Photo's for a decent honest price & not the $20 8x10 with all the border material that isn't wanted or needed.

The Love Boat theme with the female singer belting it out at sailaway.

Our friends had a room steward who would bring them a pitcher of tomato juice and limes every morning and place it on the floor outside of their cabin so they could mix their own Bloody Marys. (I don't even remember if there was room service back then!!)

They used to shape the nightgown you left out into different shapes on the bed every night....precursor to towel animals I guess.

Often we'd get back from being out and about the ship and the room steward was hanging out in the hallway...he'd rush and open the door. He'd even tell me...your mom (in another cabin) went to the pool! They had less cabins to take care of back then and they were very personable.

Ship's officers were assigned to certain tables....several times we had the ship's doctor at ours....they would host twice a week...free wine and lots of great conversation.

They made pasta fresh tableside every night....and came around to offer it to everybody.

Your waiter and busboy were your waiter and busboy for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. I've got to say I never made breakfast...and the poor folks had to work even crazier hours than they did now.

There used to not be many (if any) children onboard....and there used to be an adults only covered pool. I liked the quiet.
    Upcoming cruise:
Avalon Luminary 4/28/12, with time in Amsterdam and Paris before and after
