With so much Cristiano Ronaldo mania around, I felt it was the right time talk about him.
Football fans or not, most people, in all corners of the world, at one time or another in their lifes, probably have heard the name Cristiano Ronaldo.
This 24 year old young man, born in Funchal, Madeira on the 5th February 1985, the last born child in a modest, but loving family of 6, is now the most famous football player in the entire universe.
From an early age, he developed his very own way of dealing with a ball. He enjoyed it so much that, after school, when his mother sent him to his room to do his homework, he used to sneak out through the window, to play with a ball.
In 1993, when he was 8, he started playing in Andorinha, a club in the residencial area of Santo António, the suburb where he lived with his parents and his two sisters and brother.
Then, from 1995 till 1997 he played in Nacional, one of Funchal's clubs.
As by now he was already showing his exceptional tallent, he grabbed the attention of one of Portugal's main teams, Sporting. So, as a 12 year boy, he moved to mainland Portugal, where he stayed for 6 years.
As he was still so young, his very supportive mother left everything behind, to accompany and stay with him, showing the great expectations she had in her son's future.
In 2003, when Cristiano Ronaldo was 18, he had the opportunity to take the big leap, when Sir Alex Fergusson from Manchester United spotted him in a game, where Sporting won MU by 3-1. So off he went to Manchester where he stayed until very recently.
Last year he won the title of "World Player of the Year" by both FIFPro and FIFA. With such big fame, no wonder he did cause some envies.
In an attempt to get him, Real Madrid offered Manchester United 94 million euros and made a successfull transaction. For the time beeing, this one is the most expensive football player transfer in history. This also full filled Cristiano Ronaldo's chidhood dream of playing in Real Madrid.
The Ronaldo 9 in his shirt now, is a tribute to the memory of his proud father, who, unfortunatly passed away already, as the name Ronaldo was chosen by him.
His presentation as Real Madrid's player took place last Monday, in the Santiago Barnabéu Stadium, in front of an all times' record of 85.000 people.
With the fame he gained and trying to help his family, he opened a few years ago, with his sisters, two CR7 boutiques, one in Ajuda, Funchal and another one in Lisbon. CR7 stands for his initials and shirt number in Manchester United.
Even though I was named after a football player, I'm not very fond of the game.
However, my husband and my children, specially the boys, are very big football fans. They are all members of Marítimo, the most famous Madeiran football team and they don't miss one game when Sporting from Portugal is playing.
And, of course, they're so proud of Cristiano Ronaldo. I also like the boy, as he is only two months older than my son Sérgio and my son is, also, very tall, just like him.
