“Um Dia pela Vida” - Relay for Life in Funchal
American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life also reached Funchal, we were the 16th Portuguese town taking part in the event. After 4 months of awareness, closing day was well participated by the population.
Early in the morning, people gathered in front of the Town Council, to walk together to the other side of town, till they reached Parque de Santa Catarina (Saint Catherine’s Park). This was the centre of the activities in terms of lots of musical shows, either by individual singers or groups, on a stage placed there specially for this event.
Fund raising stalls were also around the place. Some of the money raised goes towards investigation on the fight against cancer.
The President of the Madeiran section of the Portuguese Cancer League said this initiative was excellent to make people aware of the importance of an early diagnosis and that, if cancer is treated in the early stages, it can be cured.
