    Local Resource for Port Canaveral

    Hello, everyone!

As you can see by checking my information above, I live very near to the cruise ship piers at Port Canaveral.
So, I thought I'd start a thread for folks who need information from a 'local' about the port or the surrounding area.

If you have a question about this port, I'd be more than happy to try to give you a good answer. And, if I don't know the answer, then there just may be someone else here who does!

I'll start the thread off (next post) by copyiing in some information I posted elsewhere about the three nearest airports and how far they each are from the port.

Hope this thread will help anyone planning to sail out of our lovely port, or anyone whose ship will be callling here during the course of their cruise.

How far is Port Canaveral from the Airport?

That depends on which airport you mean. There are three nearby.

    TO PORT CANVERAL FROM...

Orlando Airport: 48-52 min and $1.25 in tolls. Straight shot on the Beeline (528E).

Melbourne Airport: 35-50 minutes via either I-95 N to 528 or the just slightly more scenic US1 N to 528 or the even more scenic A1A N, which takes you along the ocean. All are toll-free.

Daytona Airport: approximately 54-59 boring minutes via I-95 S to 528 E. US1 S is also an option, but typically somewhat slower, and not a real outstanding drive. Don't even think about A1A from here... takes forever!

    Jim -

Good point! Let me see what information I can find. Not something I would normally use, since I don't fly in, but the info's got to be available!
I guess I wrote up the above (on another thread) in response to someone who planned on renting a car from the airport.

Incidentally, that IS a good optioin for Port Canaveral.
If you are flying in a day early, and want to have a car to toodle about in, you can do a one-way rental, and drop the car off at a Port Canaveral or Cocoa Beach car rental office. They will shuttle you to the port from there.

    Canary:

FYI we are planning to go in 2 days early........make this a 9 day trip instead of 7.......no hotel picked yet.........and by the way..........it is Easter weekend so we know prices will be high. Someone suggested Arts Shuttle..........every heard of them? And we have decided (our group) to stay in Cocoa Beach, not the Orlando area so we will need transfers of some type from Orlando to cocoa beach.............not worried about getting to the pier........

    Thanks for your help

    Jim

A lot of folks prefer to rent a car at the airport and drive to the port. That way, they'll have transportation for dinner or the beach if they have an extra day or even a few hours. Several of the rental companies around here do one-way rentals to Port Canaveral, and provide a drop-off locatioin near the port with a shuttle to the pier.

I'll try to find out which ones.

Meanwhile, here are some links for you for other alternatives:

    ORLANDO:
This page has information for Shuttles and Limos, as well as Car Rentals from the Orlando Airport:

    http://www.internationalairportguide...lando_mco.html

    MELBOURNE:
SHUTTLE - The Melbourne Airport Shuttle offers door-to-door pickup service, with special rates for Port Canaveral. Phone number: 1-800-826-4544

    DAYTONA:
From the Daytona Airport, your only options MAY be a limo or a rental car. Maybe someone know more than I do here, and can expand on the options.

LIMO - Hollywood Limousine serves the entire area, including all the surrounding airports (Orlando, Melbourne, Daytona, and even Sanford) Their number: 1-888-321-9009

Ok, now let me see if I can find out which rental car companies have local drop-offs with shuttle service.

Yes, I have heard of Art's Shuttle. Can't give you any recommendations on any shuttles, as we've never had occasion to use a shuttle. Did you get a number for them? I've had no luck finding it.... not even in the phone book (Our phone book doesn't cover Orlando, which is, I think, where they are based.)

However, now that I see you are coming in a couple of days early, I definitely think your best bet would be a rental car. Our area is not hard at all to find your way around and the traffic is pretty light.

Later on, I'm going to post a list of cool things to see and do during a pre-cruise stay. And for several of them, you'd definitely want a car.

I have not used this service so I have no recommendation..............

Actually looking to see if anyone has and might recommend them or someone else.

Do you get in on Friday?

If so, I wonder if it will be in time for you to take advantge of a leisurely Eco-tour with Island Boat Lines through the thousand islands area, or a thrill ride through the gator infested headwaters of the St Johns in an air boat?

Then, there's always an hour of zipping around the Banana river on a rented jet-ski, browsing through the 'famous' Ron John's surf shop, or shopping in historic Cocoa Villiage.

A stroll to the end of the Cocoa Beach pier is always nice... with a stop for a piece of chocolate Kaluha cake at Marlins on the way back, and then there's the beach. If you want agressive water, you've found it near the pier, where it's fun to watch the surfers. For calmer water, you'll want to drive to Jetty park.

You really are gonna want a car to get you from the hotel to Kennedy, though. I guess you could always call a cab, but I have a feeling it might be at least $15-20 each way. that's nearly the price of a day's car rental right there!
