CAPE CANAVERAL --
A major contractor for NASA said it has a plan to keep the space shuttles flying.
According to Florida Today, the United Space Alliance said it wants to take control of the shuttles as a private company, then launch two shuttle flights a year.
The company told the paper it could do the launches at a cost of less than $1.5 billion dollars a year and is asking NASA for financial help on a study to see if it's doable.
The head of the alliance admits the plan is a long shot, but said it could save jobs and help bridge the gap before other private companies get their flights up and running.
As it stands now the final shuttle launch is set for later this year.
