Port Collects Aid for Haiti to ship out on FOS

Port Canaveral Leads Local Haitian Relief Effort

What: The Canaveral Port Authority in partnership Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines International and Port Canaveral tenants Ambassador Services Inc. and American Cruise Aid Logistics is coordinating efforts to provide aid to earthquake victims in Haiti. The community is being asked to donate water and dry food products, such as beans and rice, as well as cooking oil. The items should be placed in cardboard boxes for easier storage and shipping. Some 30 pallets will be shipped aboard Royal Caribbean's Freedom of the Seas when it sails from its homeport at Canaveral on January 24. The ship arrives in Labadee, Haiti two days later. Royal Caribbean is working with established relief agencies-- Food for the Poor and Pan American Development Foundation, a division of the Organization of American States. The agencies will be responsible for warehousing and delivery of donations to the people of Haiti. Both agencies have worked with the cruise agency in other relief efforts. The operations will be conducted under U.N. supervision and with assistance from the State Department.

Mccruiser is in town, and we got together for dinner last night, and then went shopping.
We were able to get some of almost every item on the list. This morning three boxes are packed and ready to go, with a fourth in progress I just need to pick up a few more things to fill it out.
Later, I'll take the four boxes over to othe port, so from the two of us, there will be at least 80 lbs of supplies loaded on the Freedom this weekend and off loaded in Labadee on Tuesay.
I know that's nnot a lot because so much is needed, but at least we are able to help a little!

Sheila, every lb helps those poor souls in Haiti. As usual, you are doing what is needed. Wish I could be there to help you fill a few more boxes. Thanks for doing what you can

It was such a pleasure to help you get the items to send to the people of Haiti.

While many places are saying that we should send money instead, I like to send actual items as well, when I know there is a way to send them that is reliable and economical. I am so happy that Royal Caribbean is taking advantage of their foothold on Haiti to do this, because it frees up space on planes for larger equipment and personnel.

I will be sending money as well, but this was an opportunity that I did not want to pass up. Thanks for making it happen, Sheila.
