Carnival Dream to Homeport at Canaveral!

    From Florida Today
Carnival to put largest ship at Port

Carnival Cruise Lines said today it will base its largest ship to date, the Carnival Dream, at Port Canaveral beginning in fall 2009.

The 130,000-ton ship will accommodate 3,652 passengers, based on double occupancy, and will be the first in a new class of ship for Miami-based Carnival.

The ship is being built in Italy. Carnival said the ship’s itinerary will be disclosed at a later date.

Carnival did not say whether the Dream will replace one of its ships currently based at Port Canaveral.

Carnival operates the 2,974-passenger Glory on seven-night Caribbean cruises and the 2,052-passenger Sensation on three- and four-night Bahamas cruises out of Brevard County’s seaport.

Here's the press release from the Carnival website:

Carnival Cruise Lines has announced that the new 130,000-ton Carnival Dream – the largest “Fun Ship” ever constructed – will be based at Port Canaveral, Fla., beginning in fall 2009. Details on the ship’s itinerary will be provided at a later date.

Currently under construction at the Fincantieri shipyard in Monfalcone, Italy, the 3,652-passenger Carnival Dream is the first in a new class of ship for the line with a unique interior design, sleek hull and distinctive profile, along with a host of innovative facilities and features which will be released in the coming months.

The deployment of the Carnival Dream to Port Canaveral continues the line’s 18-year relationship with the Canaveral Port Authority, the longest tenure of any cruise line there.

In addition to the Carnival Dream, the line has two other “Fun Ships” scheduled to enter service – the 113,300-ton Carnival Splendor, set to debut in Europe July 2, 2008, and the 130,000-ton Carnival Magic, slated for delivery in June 2011.

Have you noticed that the cruise lines seem to have run out of names for their new ships and are naming them the same thing as some other ships already afloat? Of course, Carnival puts "Carnival" at the beginning of their ship names which will make it less confusing, but what happened to originality?

Yep. There is a LOT of repetition in the industry. I think that's been around for a while.

It's also fairly common practice to name a modern ship the same name as a ship of old.

Oour beloved Sovereign of the Seas is an example of that.
There was the HMS Sovereign of the Seas in the 1600's, a gunboat.
Then there was a American clipper ship called the Sovereign of the Seas in the 1800's.
OUR Sovereign of the Seas, launched in 1988, is the third ship with that name that I know of.
I guess there could be more.
