An interesting bit of invormation from the above referenced site:
Modern public transportation systems make it easy, and affordable, to explore the Riviera Maya from Playa del Carmen. Hop on a bus and explore the ruins at Tulum, Coba or Chichen Itza. Catch a collectivo bus to snorkel the lagoons at Xcaret or Xel Ha. Take the ferry to Cozumel and dive in the world-famous reef. Busses from Playa del Carmen to downtown Cancun depart every 15 minutes.
Which major mass market cruise lines have ports stops there now?
This use to be a place where cruises would drop pax off to see the ruins and they would be returned to Cozumel at the end of the day. (Did that once ... and once was enough! )
It's been years ... but another time we spent a WONDERFUL day at a shabby beach bar in Playa Del Carmen... rented their beach chairs and it was so rustic and REAL! We loved it and would go back happily if it were on our itinerary.

Our last time there was on a Costa Cruise ... but it quite a while back....
Wonder why so few ships go there?
