Things to do in Playa del Carmen

Flip-flops by day. Dancing shoes by night. There's nothing sleepy about this busy little beach town. Perfectly placed on Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula and surrounded by vanilla sands, mystic jungles and the Caribbean Sea, Playa del Carmen has everything going for it. It is, after all, the heart of the Mayan Riviera- so think sun, sand, surf and salsa! And if you feel like escaping this civilization for a while, take a short drive and a giant leap back in time to the world of the Mayans. Tulum's ancient archeological treasures are only an hour away!

The One Thing You Don't Want to Miss

The secret cenotes and caverns of the Yucatan Peninsula are mythic places shrouded in many a Mayan legend, not to mention a boatload of natural wonderment. Chaak Tun is one of these sacred spots and very worthy of your must-visit list. The area is probably best explored with a guide who can give you the lowdown on ancient folklore and some geographical insight on its luminous limestone stalagmites and stalactites. And for a little extra awe - snorkel through the crystal waters of the cenotes and view it in all its underwater glory.

On and near 5th Avenue

Shopping for Bargains

5th Avenue is the stomping ground for serious shoppers. You can browse in funky fashion boutiques, bargain for silver jewelry and pick up everything from pottery and ponchos to t-shirts and tequila. And the atmosphere is complete with street musicians, entertainers and is extra fiesta-like!

Get a Taste of Local Flavor

There are plenty of upscale restaurants serving the catch of the day. You also won't have a problem finding, go figure, Italian food. But remember this is land of margaritas, mariachis and fish tacos. So seek out an authentic Mexican experience on the streets off 5th Avenue heading away from the beach.
