Not only is it a must, but you must coordinate with someone else.
The Canal has two lanes...........you won't know which lane you are assigned until the morning before........like 5am.........
We get a port side balcony and our traveling companions get a starboard side balcony..........
Depending on the lane you are assigned, one side of the ship will be better than the other side.
In April of 04 both times through the canal our balcony on the port side didn't show much of anything but our friends on the starboard side had a great view both times.........we ended up watching the transit from their balcony.
So make sure you pare up with somebody to make sure you are covered, no matter which lane the ship is assigned.
