Am I right in assuming that a starboard balcony stateroom would be preferable? We would be traveling from FL to CA, so the starboard would be facing land predominately, and would face the north side of the canal.
There is no guarantee which locks you will be using. Latest I've heard is that they use both locks one-way for a time, and then switch direction and use both locks in the other direction.
For instance, on the Brilliance we were in the left set of locks, while watching a cargo ship follow us, in the same direction, in the set of locks on the right.
We would be traveling from FL to CA, so the starboard would be facing land predominately, and would face the north side of the canal.
And, I know I am going to start a HUGE discussion over this, but if you are on the starboard side and going FL to CA, you will actually be facing west and south for the majority of your transit.
I'll see how many others agree, or not, before commenting further...

Oh Neal, you've ruined all the fun. You're such a troublemaker!
It's always fun to confuse others and explain that as we go from the Caribbean to the Pacific, we actually travel east, and end up farther east than we started.
You can get a little better idea from the attached.
