Sloth Sanctuary and Canoe Adventure

Here's something that sounds interesting - and just a little different. Although I found it on the Royal Caribbean website, I would think it would be available to those sailing other lines, as well.

Sloth Sanctuary and Canoe Adventure

Port/City: Puerto Limon, Costa Rica

Activity Type:
Beach and/or Water-Related Activities | Adventure Tours | Wilderness & Wildlife Tours

Approximate Duration:
4 hour(s) 30 minute(s)

Prices starting from:
*76.00 USD (Adult)
*52.00 USD (Child)

*Prices shown above are representative. Dates, times and prices are subject to change and may not be available for your sailing.

This is an opportunity to get an up close and personal look into the interesting world of the much misunderstood sloth. Upon arrival at Aviarios del Caribe, you will be met by Luis and Judy Arroyo, the owners of this non-profit and unique sloth sanctuary and research center in Costa Rica.

A short 45 minute ride from the Limon Port is all it takes onboard air conditioned motor coaches. One will board our safe and silent fiberglass canoes for a guided nature paddle where an expert canoe-man will row silently through the natural waterways and the lush tropical vegetation of Costa Rica's rich Caribbean humid tropical rain forest biodiversity. In this protected setting, 312 species (and still counting) have been identified, along with other creatures such as caiman, coati-mundi, kinkajous, anteaters, monkeys, river otters, turtles, myriad lizards and countless butterflies, all of which inhabit these rich Caribbean lowlands.

You will then go to the Sloth Sanctary. The introduction to the sloth sanctuary begins with an interesting 7-minute video that explains the on-going scientific studies being carried out at Aviarios. An approximately 45-minute tour introduces you to many of the individual sloths, including the queen of the center, "Buttercup," and you will learn their stories and what the hopes are for their future.

A question and answer period allows you to learn much about the sloth's needs and habitat, then you can take walks on the protected trails adjoining the sanctuary with local guides to feel the majesty of nature. You will also have time to go to the souvenir store to purchase items to bring back home.
