It is very difficult to put an experience such as traveling on the isthmian railroad under one name. Really, it is an exotic cocktail of experiences and history all rolled-up together. Just imagine traveling on the tracks of the first trans-continental railroad, running parallel to what is known as the 8th wonder of the world, the Panama Canal. Combine that with the extraordinary beauty in flora and fauna and the spectacular views of Gatun Lake. Leaving from Colon City on the Caribbean coast, the story begins with a drive into history about the city once called Aspinwall. Famous names such as Christopher Columbus or Ferdinand de Lesseps, among others, are mentioned and as history unfolds over time, the scenery also changes. Upon arriving at Gatun Lake, the large vessels carrying the worlds commerce can be seen transiting the Panama Canal. This incredible feat of engineering changed the maritime world forever. You will then cross the Continental Divide and find yourself on the Pacific side. Now approaching Panama City, you will have a close look at the Locks of the Canal and can also see some of the old Canal Zone areas, recently retuned to the people of Panama. As you enter the Capital, you can see how different influences throughout history put their mark on this surprising city, which was actually the first city on the Pacific Ocean. While in the Pacific side, you will visit the Miraflores Visitor Pavilion where you will see a film about the Panama Canal and also view the operation of the Panama Canal at the Lookout. Also you will visit the YMCA Craft Market that has a large variety of craftsmen showing their creations. On the way back you will be traveling by bus on the Transismica Highway which is the only road that connects Panamas 2 largest city of Panama and Colon. Note: While in Miraflores, seeing a vessel pass through the Canal is not guaranteed as traffic schedules vary daily. Minimum age to participate is 2 years old.
