Cruise ships at sea safe from tsunami's destruction

Friends and family are anxious to connect with cruise passengers in the Pacific as tsunamis spawned by Japan's massive earthquake roll through the ocean.

Meanwhile, cruise lines are checking in with their ships, and experts say the open seas are the best place to be if you're on a ship in a tsunami-threatened region.

    yes I read that Norman

In Hawaii, Norwegian Cruise Line's Pride of America left port in Kauai early to get back to open water where conditions were safe for the ship, according to the company's website. The ship was expected to return to Kauai after the tsunami threat passed.

I wonder here if they left at short notice and everyone was aboard ? I guess it was very early in the morning so everyone woold have been.

Wikipedia has some info on the Tsunami Warning System Tony. Here's a link:

One part of the article is absolutely amazing....

"The elephants in the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami fled for the hills. They sensed the tsunami due to their ability to hear the soundwaves outside of the range of human hearing range of 20Hz and 20,000Hz. In addition to hearing within the human range, elephants can also hear in the range of Infrasound, beneath 20 Hz down to 0.001 Hz."

Here in SF we had no tsunami evacuation plans until the '09 one in Indonesia. I live several blocks from the beach and noticed tsunami evac route signs posted along the first couple blocks about almost a year later. The tsunami shelter is located at the school across the street from my house so I hope we're in a "safe" zone.
