Utopia Residential Ship Signs Contract with Samsung Shipyard

Samsung Heavy Industries of Seoul, Korea, said it has secured a $1.1 billion binding letter of intent to build the Utopia residential ocean liner. The Utopia ocean liner will have a boutique luxury hotel and 200 privately owned residences. “This is an historic day for Samsung, for Korea and for all of Asia because this ocean liner will be the most luxurious ship in the world, and the largest passenger ship ever built on the Asian continent,” said J.W. Kim, vice chairman of Samsung. Completion of the 105,000-ton ship is expected in 2013.

Utopia will have 200 residences ranging in size from 1,400 to 6,600 square feet. It also will have a 204-room boutique hotel, casino, spa, theater, night club, swimming pools, marina, restaurants and private residents club. The ship will travel to ports during major cultural and sporting events, such as the Cannes Film Festival, Monte Carlo Grand Prix, The Olympics, Carnaval, Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival, Melbourne Cup and other events. Utopia also plans to host humanitarian events in port cities around the world.

Capt. Ola Harsheim, senior vice president of Utopia, previously helped design and build The World, the first residential ocean liner ever constructed. The World launched in 2002 and Harsheim remained at its helm for more than five years. Utopia Residences has showrooms at 421 N. Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills and at 980 Madison Ave. and 575 Madison Ave. in NYC. For more information, call 315-294-5031 or visit Utopia.

    Any updates on these 3?

Three other major residential ships are in various stages of preparation. The Four Seasons, a ship owned by and named after the hotel chain, is selling units now with plans to launch in the fall of 2007. Prices go as high as $15 million. On the Orphalese, scheduled to set sail in 2008, you can buy a small, two-bedroom suite for as little as $1.8 million (plus $2,500 monthly); their largest and most luxurious four-bedroom units start at $8.8 million (plus $5,500 per month). And a ship called The Magellan is already selling condos even though construction hasn’t yet begun; the 200 units are priced from $1.8 million to $8 million (with a fractional one-month ownership for as little as $156,250). One perk on the Magellan I find quite appealing is an observatory with an astronomer on staff.

These projects do seem interesting but not something I would ever expect to sail on.

What I have found out from their web sites are the following:

The Magellan is shceduled to start cruising in May 2010.

The Four Season is estimated delivered in 2010.

Orphalese is also slated for a 2010 debut.

I suppose we will find out for sure sometime next year

Wonder how the sales have been in this economy? Really expensive to buy and maintain from what I remember.
