Wendy, I will try to answer this from experience of last week. When you do the new On-Line check in and mark credit card a box does pop upsaying that are putting a hold on your CC I will say that the hold was not placed till the day we cruised and it looked like it was only for 2 days at a time. I hceked it once while we were on board the ship and it was still only showing $240 for the 2 of us. The hold definitely was not placed till the day we boarded the ship. Because I have always used a credit card I cannot answer about the cash. I know some have mentioned that doing the on-line thing they claimed they would mark cash then when they checked in would use their CC but in all honesty I did not have a single problem and like I said they did not place any type of hold till after we checked in to board the ship.
Wendy-
Forgive me for missing your last post....sometimes I am clueless!!
Yes teens are very exhausting, the 15 yo seems to be needing a lot of attention these days.....
I just try to remind myself that he will be gone soon, so I had better enjoy all my time with him. I very rarely see my 19 yo, he is in college and working so he pops by for an occasional meal or tank of gas and a meal.
I wish I could tell you a way around that deposit, I know that it really seems unfair to have that balance free or have that much is a debit account...
I have one credit card, an American Express, just for that reason. AMEX will guarantee the charge although we have never spent anywhere near the amount they place a "hold" on.

Hello Everyone. I hope everyone is doing well. Has anyone else booked a cruise for Thanksgiving week? This will be the first time that we will be away on Thanksgiving. I don't know if you have read my last post. I was VERY upset that Hal would be holding a hugh amount of money on my credit card. For 3 people they would be holding $1,260.00 until the end of the cruise and at that time they would release those funds to pay for our expenses during the cruise. Which means.................how do I do my shopping in port. We have been on many cruises..........and this is a first. Anyway, we did come to a very nice compromise and I am a happy person, once again. Wendy
We have cruised a couple of times over Thanksgiving. One time we had far too many children on board!! Do not think that we will have to worry about that this year as our cruise is 23 days long -- definitely won't have a lot of children on it.
We use AmexPlat -- no problems with them holding $60 per person per day as we have no limits on those cards. We each have our own card.

Someone tell me why and what is CC holding? I have never heard of it. Do they do this to everyone with a CC? How do you pay for things in port if you can't use your card PARTY !

Hello everyone. Hello Kateri. I read your post. If you are sailing on HAL they will hold $60.00 per person each day on your credit card. For 3 people that will be $1,260.00 in funds that you need to have on your credit card. AND that is after paying off the cruise 75 days before sailing. At the end of the cruise they will settle the bill from what they hold and will bill you only for the amount of funds that you have used. Until that time, your money is tied up. If your money is tied up, you cannot use the card in port....unless you put more money on your credit card...we will be using our debit card. HAL and I worked it out. Wendy

Hey Wendy
For the benefit of other HAL cruisers, would you care to tell us how you worked it out with HAL? I'm sure there have been others in your same situation.
Hello everyone. Kateri...I did reply to your post, for some reason I cannot find it anywhere on the board, strange??????????? Anyway, HAL was kind enough to discount my daughter's fare and then they gave me a shipboard credit. However, they still will be holding $60.00 per day per person...$1,260.00........but at least I will have some pocket money on shore. I am very happy with that and I am sure that HAL will have a great cruise . Wendy
Thanks for all your help everyone I just didn't know the name for it. Plus I don't take care of this stuff.
