    Movie Recommendations

I really enjoy all sorts of movies and figured many of you do also,

In the age of Cable TV, Netflix, Hulu and on demand videos more and more movies are becoming readily available.

I thought we could start a thread based around movie recommendations - cruise travel or non cruise travel related.

I'll start if off with a semi cruise related film suggestion.

The Legend of 1900 with Tim Roth

    http://movies.netflix.com/WiMovie/Th...?trkid=2361637

"Raised aboard an ocean liner after being abandoned there as an infant, 1900 (Tim Roth) becomes a virtuoso piano player who learns about the outside world only through interactions with passengers, never setting foot on land, even for the love of his life. Years later, the ship may be destroyed, and a former band member fears that 1900 may still be aboard, willing to go down with the ship in this compelling drama from director Giuseppe Tornatore."

It's a great flick with lovely settings from a the throwback era of luxury cruise liners.

    Enjoy!

Here's another really sweet film for kids and adults -

    Mary and Max

    http://movies.netflix.com/WiMovie/Ma...3?trkid=496624

"Mary Dinkle, a chubby 8-year-old Australian girl, and Max Horovitz, an obese, middle-aged New Yorker with Asperger's syndrome, are a pair of unlikely pen pals in this quirky clay animation feature from writer-director Adam Elliot. Corresponding for two decades, the friends delve into a variety of topics, including sex, kleptomania, psychiatry, taxidermy and more. Toni Collette and Philip Seymour Hoffman provide the voices of Mary and Max."

Don't let the animation part turn you off - its a sweet little story everyone can enjoy.

And one more for now. It's an oldie, but a goodie with one the all time greatest actors ever - Paul Newman.

Hombre - really ahead of its time as far as a discussion on race relations. Give it a view on Instant Netflix.

    http://movies.netflix.com/WiMovie/Ho...1?trkid=496624

"Paul Newman stars as a half-Indian shunned by his fellow stagecoach passengers until a holdup forces them to trust him as he finds a way out of the desert. More 1960s than 1860s, this Western takes a hard look at racial injustice in the Old West."

For those ready to go on a cruise and are flying to their destination.....

    Airport (earlier versions are better)
    Airplane
    snakes on a Plane
    Titanic
Poseidon Adventure (Stay away from Poseidon 2- it was bad)

Speed 2 was a dumb movie but it has some great shots of St. Marteen.

Just trying to be helpful, Tim.

Poseidon 2 was offensive to all my sensibilities - just awful. Let's steer clear of the original as well these days.

Snakes on a Plane can be fun if you're in the mood to laugh a a really horrible movie, in a good way. Anyone remember Mystery Science Theater 3000? Similar concept.

We'll revisit Titanic later in the year when the 100th anniversary comes about - until then we'll leave it on the shelf next to Poseidon Adventure 1 and 2.

So you are in agreement with Airplane and Speed 2?

I wasn't going to bust your chops about Speed 2. How dare you leave off Speed in favor of some pretty shots of an exotic island. Dennis Hopper, man!

Airplane is a standard and should be viewed in all film history classes everywhere. Right after Eisenstein's Battleship Potemkin.

Airplane is a great movie but no love for Airplane 2?

    Redeye was good.
Soul Plane was funny if you are into that kind of stuff.
Planes, Trains and Automobiles is one of my favorites and relates to travel.
Back to the Future is probably my favorite and kind of relates to travel.
    Topgun
The Terminal (a nightmare for anyone traveling internationally)
    Air America
The Aviator (admit I have not finished it but like the 90% I did see)

That 1900 movie sounds pretty sweet Tim too bad I no longer have Netflix by mail service... I will check it out other ways - maybe Vudu or Redbox.

Don't call me Shirley. Airplane is one of my favorites.

Right now on the other computer (since my daughter went to sleep early), I have on "The Kings Speech" which I borrowed my the library.

The movies I've watched in the last month have included Harry Potter & the Deathly Hallows 1 and 2, which I actually bought (I rarely do) -- we've already watched the DVDs a couple of times, Bridesmaids and the Help (rented those), Avatar (I think that was streamed from Netflix) as was To Sir with Love.

Good selection. Air America reminded me of my last flight on American.....
Back to the future did have a train! (that could fly and go through time) The schedule must have been amazing (leaving LA at 9:00 AM, arriving in Seattle 11:30 AM - the previous week)
