Thread: Don't Forget Veteran's Day! 11/11/11

REMEMBER, next Friday is 11/11/11.

Obviously, this is a very historical date. But more important, let us not forget it's true importance; it's VETERAN'S DAY!!

It's not just another day off for a 3-day weekend. It's not just another day when new movies are being released. It's not just another day to have a big sale. It's a day to honor and celebrate all those selfless individuals who are serving or who have served in our country's military.

"There is no greater honor than to respect those who have shown the strongest, most generous, and proudest of all virtues.... courage."

"A Veteran is someone who, at one point in his or her life, wrote a check made payable to 'The United States of America' for an amount of 'up to and including my life'."

Remember, Memorial Day is a time to pay our respect to those who gave their lives in service to our country. Veteran's Day is the time to give our thanks to those who served or are currently serving our Nation who, often times, are not recognized enough for the sacrifices they and their families have made or are making so that we can enjoy our freedom.

Our daughter is one of these very special people; she is currently serving in the Navy and is on deployment in Europe away for 6 months from her husband and her 2-1/2 year old son. She is our daughter, but she is also our sailor and our hero. I cannot tell her often enough how very proud we are of her. I keep her and all our servicemen and women in my prayers every day in hopes they will all come home safely to those who love them and miss them.

So make it a point to go out of your way and say 'Thank You' to a veteran - it'll make both of you feel very special.

Thanks, Mike! Always thought it would be one of my boys following in my footsteps - never thought it would be our daughter. But she's always been the one to break the mold. She was the first girl ever to play varsity hockey for any high school in the No. Virginia Scholastic Hockey League (NVSHL) that has 38 teams. She played for 2 years and started the trend. Now, there are girls on most of the teams - not many girls - perhaps 1 or 2 per team, but she started it all. So it was no surprise to us that she wanted to join the military, but she did surprise us when she announced it would be the Navy since she had always said she wanted to join the Air Force.

I encourage everyone to make sure and fly your American flags on Friday to show your support for our brave men and women serving in our military.

Our next-door-neighbors are putting out our flag when they do theirs for Friday ... since we'll be gone.

There's a very BIG Veterns Day Parade here every year! Columbia is not only the capitol on SC ... but also the home of Ft.Jackson.

A heartfelt thank you to all our veterans and to those currently serving to protect our freedom.


Especially to my favorite veteran.
