Patty, since you liked "Shanghai Girls", an excellent book I just finished is "The Hotel on the Corner of Bitter & Sweet" by Jamie Ford. This is written to swing back and forth from the past (WWII) & present. It's a coming of age Romeo & Juliet type love story. A young American Chinese boy is sent to an American school and meets an American Japanese girl there who are both shunned by the other students. His parents, especially his father, hates the Japanese and forbids his friendship with the girl. Later she & her family is sent to an internment camp in Idaho. His love for her never failed but his situation at home took a turn for the worse.
