WOW! I just reread this whole thread and again realized all the support we received from all of you during a very difficult time.
Update on Hermon - doctors decided not to do any surgery on the scar tissue from the trach as they are afraid it would do more damage than good. So for the rest of his life he will be breathing through a straw size opening. That and the inability to move his neck and head are what he has to live with. But considering the options with his injuries, those permanent problems are not bad at all. He has pretty much reclaimed his life and is now back to spending many hours with the Shrine. He is now starting to look at replacing his classic car and evaluating options. I'm holding out on agreement to anything.
Grandson number 2, Kenley Edmund arrived on 30 Aug and came in at 8lbs 9 ozs and 21 inches long. He is adorable! Big brother is adjusting as well as any normal 2 year old would.
As Reggie knows, we have finally booked a cruise again. We will be going on the Voyager OTS one year after the accident for what I call our "Celebration of Life Cruise."
Again thank you from the bottom of our hearts for all the prayers, thoughts and concerns. Life for us goes on.

Maggie, I am so glad to hear that Hermon is doing so much better, and congratulations on your new grandson! We are expecting a new grandchild on Dec. 30th. It will be interesting to see how well Nate will take it. He has been a doll so far. Congrats again!

I'm glad to hear that you'll be going on this cruise. After the year that both of you had, you'll have so much appreciation for the trip. And you can look for exotic gifts for your newest member of the family.

Reggie, I bet she has! They are both such cuties! I don't think I told you, but my Dad was blind. Although there are many obstacles in life, he seemed to overcome them, and I'm sure Mia will too, with such a loving family.

Maggie & Hermon, enjoy your celebratory cruise on the Voyager. I hope you have the time of your lives!

Hermon, I thought of you last weekend watching the Shriner's drive around in their little cars during our annual Labor Day and Fair & Frontier Days parade.

Maggie, I was so glad to read your good news. As for the surgery, don't discount the possiblity that new methods may come up that the docs will think would suit Hermon. There is so much that can be done today that wasn't available just a few years ago, so I know that in a few years from now there will be even more advances. God be willing, one or more of those will be for Hermon's benefit.

Can't wait to wish you a Bon Voyage!

Maggie, it is so great to hear that things are getting back to "normal". There will always be rough spots but I am glad to see that mostly there is a big silver lining that is starting to show.

    Best of luck, ongoing.

Hi Everyone! What a difference a year makes. We feel so blessed to have come through the trials and joys and amazing realization of the wonderful friendships and thankfulness of prayers answered. We have returned from the annual Laredo parade - the parade that Hermon was headed to when he had his accident last year. This year I drove and all was well.

We did have the great honor of meeting the Boarder Patrol Agent that jumped in the car and held Hermon's neck and head still for 30 to 40 minutes and saved his life. If he hadn't and any of the 3 breaks to the C-1 intruded on the spinal cord, Hermon wouldn't be with us. Agent Rodriquez was truly an angel and meeting him was an honor for us.

Since the Boarder Patrol agents are federal employees, we knew they can not accept personal gifts over $25.00. We also know that recognizition means alot and goes into their records. So we contributed to the 100 Million Club of the Shrine Hospitals in each name of the 3 agents on the scene as well as to the North Laredo Station. One of the the agents is no longer with the boarder patrol and one agent is on special duty to Florida to deal with the Haiti emergency. We are very sorry we did not get to meet those agents.

Funny thing was that the Boarder Patrol Public Affairs Officer thought it would be a small ceremony with only the family attending. Well, yes the family did attend. And the local newspaper. When the 3rd van load of Shriner's showed up for the ceremony, it was moved outside as there was no space large enough to handle the crowd. There was around 60 Shriner's there to give thanks to the Boarder Patrol for saving Hermon's life. Not only were we happy for their appreciation and respect to these individuals who put their lives on the line everyday but it was yet another reminder of how fortunate we are to know so many wonderful people. That goes for our friends here. We so appreciate all the support we had during the difficult times of a year ago.

The realization of how many blessings we have has been a true gift of this hard time. A lesson we will never ever forget.
Instead of losing Hermon, we gained a new family member - Kenley Edmond - this past year. And he will be able to know his Grandpa.

Blessings to our DDIL as she endured the trip and dealt with a 2 year old and a 6 month old. Okay, DS did help. And of course Adlee was the best 2 year old there is on the face of the earth. Still he is 2 and is very, very good at being 2!

Thank you to everyone who prayed for us during our difficult time. And may God truly bless you as he has us.
