On a bright, brisk morning in Istanbul, godmother Fana Holtz named Nautica, Oceania Cruises’ newest ship. The pierside ceremony in Galata port opened with an Ottoman-inspired procession of costumed musicians playing cymbals and drums, and included blessings by an iman, a rabbi and a Roman Catholic priest.

Istanbul Mayor Kadir Topbas and Turkish Transportation Minister Binali Yildirim spoke of the importance of tourism to the economy and the growth of the cruise sector. Seven Turkish ports are now regularly receiving international passenger ships and a hefty investment is planned to upgrade Istanbul’s Galata port.

Spanning Europe and Asia, Istanbul was a fitting choice for today’s naming festivities ‘as these will be the areas Nautica will be sailing in the months ahead,’ noted Oceania chairman Joe Watters. Watters and Oceania president and ceo Frank Del Rio thanked travel agents and shareholders for helping their young company quickly achieve success in both product ratings and financial performance.

Del Rio also excited the crowd by announcing advanced discussions for the acquisition of a fourth ship, to be named Marina.

Del Rio introduced godmother Fana Holtz, who established Holtz Children’s Hospital at Miami’s Jackson Memorial Hospital and serves as a prominent patron of numerous charitable causes. She is the wife of investor Abel Holtz who, together with son Daniel, was instrumental in the founding of Oceania Cruises. Both men are advisers to the company, with Daniel serving as chairman of the executive committee.

During the naming ceremony, Oceania presented a donation for $25,000 to the children’s wing of Istanbul’s Zeynep Kamil Hospital.

Nautica sails today on a positioning cruise to Piraeus. The ship will spend its inaugural season in Asia.
