Like a phoenix....Norway might have escaped again

The Norway appears to have escaped once again the possibility of being scrapped.

As of January 20th 2006, her death sentence was lifted and she maybe back on the market although no decision about her immediate future has been made. There has been a great deal of concern across the maritime world that this venerable old lady would be lost forever. She is the last of the old giants and she has given many people so much pleasure over the years.

I travelled on her when she was known by her formal name 'France'. And although its many years since then,I still hold very fond memories of her.

Hopefully Star Cruises will keep her and repair her, she is repairable at a cost but that cost would be well worth it according to her former crew which some are now aboard NCL Crown and who were aboard when the accident occurred in the engine room.

I for one hope that she will be saved and will be gracing her home, the oceans of the world again very soon.

There are so many ships that we have lost, hopefully this one can be saved.

After years of saying I would never, never take a cruise, we broke down and booked a cruise on the Norway. We have been forever hooked. I love the ships we sail, but none will ever take the place of that wonderful old ship. She is gorgeous and elegant. When we pulled out of Miami, folks were lined up along the shore watching her leave. And I hear that this was a common occurance each time she left port. Stately and elegant. Let's hope what you hear is true!!!!!

One of the most graceful, beautiful ships ever.
How could this gorgeous hull be allowed to be scrapped? The last true ocean liner. A real "Ship of State"
The world will never see another like her. May she be with us for years to come.

    Still a magnificent lady!!!
Some people try to turn back their odometers. Not me! I want people to know why I look this way. I've traveled a long way, and some of the roads weren't paved.

Very cool. What type of work needs to be done? Are they trying to return her to her days of grandeur or trying to make her competitive with some of the newer ships?

Nobody knows if she will ever be put back in service. IMO she won't be. She has been sitting idle for a long time, and that is not a good thing for a ship. NCL said that she will never sail for them again. Much of her furnishings were removed during her Bremerhaven lay-up.
She may end up in Asia as a casino ship.
The best thing probably is for a French consortium to purchase her, and bring her back to France as a hotel.
    I'm just speculating...

There was an unfortunate accident during the Norway's last day in Port of Miami. A boiler blew up and killed about 6 crew members. It was due to that accident that she was put out of commission. She was taken back to England where it was decided to scrap her. I believe that is the reason NCL will not take her back. I doubt that she will ever be back as we once knew her. When I sailed on her, new cabins had been added, but most of the lounges and interiors were as they were when she was the luxury ocean liner SS France. I am so grateful I had the opportunity to sail on this magnificent ship.

They may save the hull but I doubt it will every sail again.
