SOLAS - What is it & what does it mean....

SOLAS - Safety Of Life At Sea is something that all ships, whether passenger or cargo, must adhere to. Older ships are compliant til 2010 unless significant upgrades are made to them and their systems, after 2010 if not upgraded sufficiently the ships will be withdrawn from service and probably scrapped. Cunard's QE2 is almost 40 years old but will be fully 2010 compliant following an extensive programme of upgrades in the recent past and in the future. Any vessel flouting these regulations can be seized and impounded and its owners heavily fined and operator licensing revoked in extreme violation cases.

The following link takes you to the entire SOLAS regulations requirements.

It is a very interesting read, albeit very long, and gives you a very good idea of just what ship operators must adhere to before allowing the ship to take to the seas.
