Norweign Jewel dress code and tips

I will be in Jewel on December as a first time cruiser!

Got questions here for all experienced cruiser:
    1) what is the formal dress code on this ship? Do I really have to dress myself with suit and tie at the formal dinner?

2)What basic rules I should follow to tip the service? how much I should pay appropriately? How I pay the tips? paying it after each service or pay a total at the first day boarding or last day?

    thx in advance!

    Hello Marcus,

Firstly, welcome to Cruise Line Fans.

On most 7 day cruise aboard NCL there is 1 optional formal night. I say optional because with NCL's freestyle cruising formal dress is becoming a thing of the past. You will find a few people dressed up in formal wear. But, for the most part the dress code for the whole cruise is Resort Casual.

Tipping is handled by charging $10 pp/day to your onboard account. This money goes into a tipping pool that is payed out to a number of people (dining and room stewards) that serve you. Since you will be dining in a variety of places at a variety of times you may not see the same server twice. If you feel someone goes way above and beyondd in assisting you feel free to tip that person additionally. We always seem to find a bar server or 2 that we give some money to at the end of the cruise. Also, depending on your cabin type you may have the services of a Butler and/or the Concierge. These people are not in the tipping pool so should be tipped for the services they render.

Any other question, do not hesitate to ask.

Thanks a lot Planersedge. Your "tips" are very helpful for my tips! Sounds like you are experienced on NCL. so let me ask your another question if you don't mind. For the Port of Miami where we are going to board on Jewel, besides taxi, is there any other public transportation available with reasonable price from/to airport? Better to be from airport at Ft. Lauderdale. If nothing, Miami's international airport is ok, too.

Thanks again for your time. and BTW, I like your funny avatar.

If you look at my signature file you will see that I have 18 NCL cruises under my belt. I have another one booked for next Spring and I am in the process of booking 2 more. So, I guess you could say that I have a "little" NCL experience.

Your transportation option to and from either Miami or Ft. Lauderdale airports are limited to taxi, private drivers, Super Shuttle or NCL transfers. Depending on the number of travelers one may be more economical than the other. How many are in your party? and how tight is your schedule to catch a flight?

No need to thank me. As the NCL guide here, I just love to help others learn as much as they can about NCL. Some aspects of NCL are not for all people as some aspects of other cruise lines are not for all people. We all are looking for what suits each of us the best.

P.S. In the future you might want to post these type of questions in the NCL forum rather than the roll calls. I don't look in here very often as well as others don't look in here very often. I would not want to miss a question and leave you missing information.
