    Good-bye, SS Norway

Scrapping has begun on the Blue Lady (which WAS the SS Norway and, before that, the France)

Here's part of the story, from Reuters, which has renamed it yet again... to "Toxic Ship."

    Laborers happily scrap "toxic" ship

ALANG SHIPYARD, India (Reuters) - After over a year of protests by environmentalists, poor workers in west India have happily begun dismantling a controversial cruise liner, ignoring potentially serious risks to their health.

The breaking of the 46,000-ton Blue Lady was given the go-ahead by India's Supreme Court last month after a long-running legal battle led by environmentalists, who said the Norwegian ship contained 900 tons of toxic waste like asbestos.

Every day, hundreds of ship breakers at the Alang shipyard in Gujarat state climb up and down the ladders stretching up to the towering 16-storey Blue Lady, bringing down tables, chairs and chandeliers.

Later, they will break down the entire ship

Unhappy As I will remember her

Makes me cry. The last time I saw the Grand dame was in November of 2002 as she sailed so proudly from Miami. Sitting in the beach watching her emerge in a long line of cruise ships sailing that day, it took my breath away. It was almost 40 years earlier when my Dad brought me to NY harbor to see the SS France after making her first crossing from Le Havre.

That is a great picture of the Norway.

I remember seeing that ship in the Port of Maimi when I took several cruises on RCCL. She looked bigger than 46,000 tons.

Actually, the GRT of the SS France was about 20,000 tons more than that.
I believe when NCL refurbbed her they also added several thousand tons to
    the GRT.
