Delivery of Pride of Hawai'i, NCL America's new flagship, has been delayed as a result of faults detected in her ABB Azipods. According to a company statement, 'the bearings were replaced last weekend following the original sea trials of the vessel and a fault has now been detected in these replacement bearings.' The ship was due to have been delivered by builder Meyer Werft yesterday in Emshaven. It will now move to Lloyd Werft in Bremerhaven, arriving on Saturday for a docking of approximately four days to replace the pod bearings. NCL America said it will take delivery of the ship once everything is resolved to the company's complete satisfaction.
Pride of Hawai'i will then sail to Baltimore (a journey that was scheduled to start today) for US Coast Guard inspections and to take on several hundred crew who have been undergoing training at the Seafarers International Union facility in Piney Point. Only 400 crew have been assigned to the ship whilst she has been undergoing construction in Germany. The full complement of 1,000 will be topped up Baltimore, Miami and finally in Los Angeles.
NCL America said the delay will not alter the vessel's inaugural events scheduled to take place in west coast in the middle of May. The christening is set for May 20 and the first revenue cruise sails on May 22.Reuters)
