Ally, have a marvelous, wonderful, enjoyable, safe, delightful trip! I will be anxious to hear EVERYTHING about your trip, especially your ports of call, since I will be doing the reverse cruise about a year after you return. I am looking forward to seeing that part of the world, so I'll bet you can hardly wait!

Question

Cheers MC

I have been keeping a close eye on the weather for next week.

I will be leaving home in 9 degree C and landing in 31 degrees C...this begs the question....what do I wear on the flights over from here to there via London and Madrid??

I had planned jumper and anorak...but that will be way too hot at the other end, if I go for t-shirt and anorak it will be too cold this end....hmmmmm, this needs careful thought and consideration cos I don't want to freeze my wotsits off this end or roast at the other end of the trip.

Speaking of clothing on this trip, for those who are going to do the Antarctic shore excursion did you see the list of clothing YOU have to bring? How in the world do you get all that gear in luggage that has a 50# limit?????

Ally, I'll miss you but at least I will have your report to look forward to. Have a great cruise-the Crown is a marvelous ship!!!

Next cruise, July 12-26, 2008. NCL Jade 13 night cruise around the British Isles, Amsterdam, Brussels, Paris.

Fortunately the weight allowance for UK passengers is 32kg, but I do know that the extra clothing is causing a few problems in that respect, Rick.

Thanks for the good wishes

I am hoping that the report will have a few more details than usual It depends on the answer I get either before I leave on Thursday or when I board Crown on the 18th

One thing I have gained permission to do while anchored off Port Stanley is throw some fresh flowers over the stern of Crown. I lost 4 schoolfriends during the Falklands War in 1982, two on HMS Sheffield and 2 on Atlantic Conveyor, both lost during the conflict. Its likely to be the only time I will be able to visit the area, so thought it would be nice to remember friends lost while I was there.

I recommend lots of thin layers that you can take on and off. It may mean a larger carryon, but that could help your stowed luggage weight limit.

When I went to school in Syracuse, all the buildings were heated to the point where you almost couldn't wear a sweater, but you had to walk 20 minutesin below freezing temps to get between them. So I learned about layering in a hurry. And getting places early so I could remove a few before classes started.

I am always cold on airplanes, so I travel with a jacket or sweater year round anyway. People always want to "help" me and put it in the overhead bin, but I use it on the plane!

Ally, I am glad you are getting to do this. To have lost so many friends in such a short period of time must have been gut-wrenching.

I have found that if you approach a company giving plenty of notice and explaining why you would like permission to do something, then generally they are very accommodating.
