So I'm trying to decide between 3 different Baltics itineraries for 2007. The itinerary I am leaning towards the most, unfortunately doesn't include Oslo as a port stop, which is a place I really wanted to see. Although I realize there is no perfect cruise itinerary out there, we have to just choose the best combination that is out there. So my question is, if I miss Oslo, will I really be missing out? Is Oslo a must stop port? Is it easy to do on your own? Or will you need to buy a shore excursion? Is it an expensive city? What is there to do/see?
I think we talked about this already Alisa, but I thought I'd add some here...
Oslo is a beautiful city....lots of museums to see, there's the Olympic Ski Jump from the 1948(?) Olympics, the old Akerhaus Fortress, the Tolerance Museum, and Vigeland Park....very easy to get around yourself, or take tours...either way, it's a beautiful, friendly country!
decisions decisions jodi. i really am leaning towards the itinerary that doesnt include oslo. but vigeland park is interesting to me as well as all the other museums. i keep changing my mind!

I'm off in the Baltics....
7/06 - Brilliance of the Seas - Mediterranean/Greek Isles
7/05 - Serenade of the Seas - Alaska
9/04 - Jewel of the Seas - Canada/New England
7/04 - Zuiderdam - Western Caribbean
7/03 - Zaandam - Alaska
4/03 - Norweigan Star - Hawaii
7/96 - Noordam - Alaska
7/96 - Golden Princess - Alaska
8/94 - Carnival Jubilee - Mexican Riviera
We had a short tour there. So much more to see that we missed, but just too little time there. The Oslo fjord was a beautiful ride back out to sea and I'm glad I saw it. Wouldn't have wanted to miss Oslo, perhaps because my great grandparents came from there.

A bit more about our tour: EZ Oslo, a Princess tour, is a guided bus tour through Oslo. What we passed by: Askerhus Fortress, City Hall, Oslo University, Royal Palace, just the gates ti Vigeland Sculpture Park, Oslo Cahtedral. We stopped at Holmenkollen Hill which was the site of the 1952 Winter Olympic ski jumping competition. We were there very early and it was very cold and windy!. We drove up the Eastern hills of Oslo and had a good view of the city and the fjord.
We got off downtown and walked through the city hall and some of the streets.
on our own.
We had a hard time chosing a tour for Oslo as the time there was short and we were trying to keep the costs down a bit. None of us was interested in the Viking ships museum, even though all 4 of us are of Norwegian ancestry.
Our tablemates had taken this same tour at a later time and they got to walk through the Vigeland Sculpture Park. We would have loved to have seen that. I guess we were disappointed with the tour but it was our choice. I guess if we only picked one bad tour of the whold Baltic, we did pretty good!
