    New Zealand ready for Tsunami

Following the Earthquake in Chilli and the expected Tsunami

The port of Napier have ordered all ships out to sea and Pacific Dawn will not be calling at Tauranga. I expect ofther ports will be closed and other ships will miss calls or have their calls cut short.

As at 10:08 NZDT, 28 February 2010, wave activity as reported on tsunami gauges is now approximately 1.0 metres at the Chatham Islands, 0.3 metres at East Cape, and 0.4 metres in Gisborne.

Rana Solomon of Chatham Islands Council reports a wave height of 1.5 metres at Pitt Island in the Chathams. Napier, Castlepoint, Tauranga and North Cape tsunami gauges are also showing initial activity of approximately the same magnitude as East Cape.

These arrival times and heights are as predicted by the Tsunami Experts Panel modelling, therefore please use the modelling data for any planning assumptions.

It is important to note that these are the first arrivals and larger waves may follow over a period of several hours.
The situation continues to be closely monitored.
