To my HORRORCelebrity Cruises have confirmed that the Millennium will be calling into SANTA CRUZ / LA PALMA and not SANTA CRUZ / TENERIFE.

MEGA MEGA disappointed.

Now too late to do anything as it is within 5 weeks of cruising

When we sailed the 2006 transatlantic, we called at "Tenerife". When I booked this cruise, at first I wondered why Celebrity had rebranded "Tenerife" to "Santa Cruz". Then, when I tried to book shore excursions a few weeks ago, shore excursions for La Palma popped up... that's when I knew :-)

There actually is a transatlantic cruise in the fall of 2007 calling at both "Tenerife" and "Santa Cruz"... !

Hi Jagsfanuk,

You aren't the only one who is mega-disappointed. One of the main reasons we booked THIS transatlantic was because of the stop on Tenerife. If you look here on the left, you can see that we live on Tenerife. We had planned to use the day here to drop off luggage, do the laundry etc. etc. and then continue on. Since we'll be away a total of almost 6 weeks, we thought it would be perfect. We've been discussing this situation on the DS for quite a while now -- ever since someone spotted the La Palma excursions the beginning of January.

Oh well - nothing to do but enjoy the change. We've never been to La Palma and now I don't have to do the laundry!! See you in a few weeks!

I have never been to La Palma and will probably make the most of it as it is meant to be a lovely island but I did not think the port was big enough for 91, 000 ton vessel!!!
I know some smaller ships who dock in La Palma.

I have spoken to and sent an email to Celebrity asking them that they should state the actual islands next time not the capital as there are 3 Santa Cruz's in the Canarys - La Gomera, Tenerife and La Palma.

Might see you in a few weeks time.

I also sent a lengthy eMail to X the beginning of January since this uncertainty of which Santa Cruz has caused us some major problems. The Customer Relations went "the extra mile" to help us find a solution, but they said they can not control how each of the internet travel agencies - and others - list the ports. I'm afraid both of our mails - and maybe some others as well - haven't helped much because vacationstogo and a couple of other agenciess are still writing Santa Cruz de Tenerife in their descriptions.
Much worse than our predicament is the situation of one of our fellow cruisers contributing on CC. Her grandparents were both killed in that terrible plane crash on Tenerife (KLM and Pan Am) in 1977. She has wanted to do this trip for years (lives in the US) in honor of her grandparents. We will be on the "wrong" island on exactly the 30th anniversary of that crash (March 27, 1977) and it has now been published that there will a memorial on Tenerife dedicated to the victims, on this 30th anniversary! How sad! My DH and I drove over to the north airport last week and got her some photos of the runways and the airport, to help her feel like she hasn't made the trip for naught.

TenerifeSharon,

Would it be worthwhile to look into options to island hop to Tenerife? There must be ferry's or intra-island flights? Or is it too far away?

Hi Floris,

Yes, we did look into alternate methods of getting to "our" island, but it would be a very close connection. The first flight we could safely hope to catch from La Palma to Tenerife would be at around 9 AM. By the time we could pick up a rental car at TFN (Tenerife Norte airport) and get to our house, it would be at least 11 AM. The last flight getting us back to the ship in time would again leave TFN at about 2:30 PM. Presuming it's on time. The ferry port is further south on Tenerife - and it would take us even longer to get to our house in the north. AND - it doesn't go on the 27th of March We are just going to enjoy the day on La Palma since we've never been there. No cares, no problems, no work!!

I do feel badly for Michell, our fellow cruiser, who really wanted to see Tenerife, since that is where her grandparents died in that horrible crash. I've suggested to her that the best possibility would be to fly to Tenerife and then meet the ship on Madeira, 2 days later. Probably doesn't make a whole lot of sense, though, to frantically try to catch the ship.

We leave for Florida (from here in Germany) on Wednesday and then enjoy 10 days there before we all board Millennium. See you all on the 18th!!
