Karen and I have an excursion pre-booked to the Chacchobean Mayan Ruins at our Costa Maya stop. Any comments on this site would be appreciated, and help us decide if we should keep the reservation or cancel it.

We did this last January and loved it! Don't cancel it.

I agree! It was one of the highlights of our cruise last December.
We went to Costa Maya because Cayman was still recovering from Ivan. There isn't a lot to do there yet, so the best bets are that you either have a beach day, or go to the ruins. Chacchoben were the closest, so we picked them, and we are glad.
It was an easy bus trip on fairly good roads, and we had an EXCELLENT tour guide. He is of Mayan descent, and was very interested in teaching people about his culture.
One of the things I really like is that this site is an excavation in progress. We could see markings left by the archeology team from the week before. We were seeing things that tourists the year before couldn't see, and if we go back, there will be new things uncovered. Teams from 2 universities here in the states go down and uncover buildings, plazas, etc. from under the jungle whenever they have money, and leave when the money runs out.
There was a typical gift shop at Chacchoben, but the sellers were very low key.
So unless someone gives you an expenses paid excursion elsewhere, I'd keep your current plans.

What is the cost of the tour?? and who ran it????
Some people try to turn back their odometers. Not me! I want people to know why I look this way. I've traveled a long way, and some of the roads weren't paved.
We took the tour through the ship, since the port is very new and we didn't have any recommendations for a tour company. It cost us around $65 a person; a little high, but we were very happy with our tour guide.

Thanks MC!! We went to Costa Maya two years ago, and it wasn't a scheduled stop. It was after a hurricane and a few ports were missed. I didn't know there were ruins there. If we ever go back, I want to see them!!![]()

In addition to Chacchoben, you can also go to the Kohunlich ruins. They are 3 hours away,so it is an all day event, but there is more uncovered there.
