Actually, a great word to know how to say in Spanish is ICE!
It's easy! Ice in Spanish is pronounced very much like our color YELLOW!
Just hold your glass up and point to it and say, "Yellow".
(We speak verycomfortable Spanish and always prounce it "yellow" , like the color in English, and they bring ice.)
Also, it is very rare for folks in Spanish speaking countries not to understand the English words: Thank You and Please! Please, do use them often.
LuLu
If you are requesting "ice" in Mexico, be sure you know how to ask for the bathroom, toilet paper, Pepto Bismol, and Preparation H because you are going to need all of those things in large quantities for approximately 3 days!
Some phrases that helped me some:
Pointt to whatever you are talking about and say: "Como se dice en espanol" (It means how do you say that in Spanish)
Mucho Gusto: glad to meet you
equalmente: same to you
vaya con dios: Go with god
Hasta la vista: see you later
con permiso (literally means with permission; use instead of saying excuse me when you need someone to get out of your way so you can get past them)
hola: hello
como amanisiete: How did you wake up this morning?
que tal: how are you?
comeda: food
aqua: water
autobus: bus
"Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Reminds me of when I went to Mexico once and was asking about the price of an item. They wanted something like $15 for it. I said no way and they guy said.... lemme ask my boss.... they started speaking in spanish and the boss said.... hhhmmmm.... ocho.... and the salesman came back to me and said.... boss says no less than $10. I looked at him and said... I do know enough spanish to know that ocho is 8..... and we left. Maybe sometimes it pays to know, but not speak!
Good point:think: Listening is always a good idea.
How do you say "I'm sorry, my husband didn't really mean to say that"...I think that's a phrase I could use now and then.
In Tahiti we both learned to say hello in Tahitian, which is Iorana and it sounds like "Your Honor" only without the r...more like Your Onna...but he never did get it right. He went around saying "You Wanna" to people. Which got us some strange looks!
