Cozumel
Downtown looks alot like in the past. A few shops are still being rebuilt, but most are open and better than what we experienced in November 2004. Streets in San Miguel are in good condition. Waterfront properties, including all of the cruise ship docks, took the brunt of Wilma's wind driven waves. On the north and east sides of the island, there was not tourist activity, so rebuilding of the infrastructure is slower. However, the road that circles the island is completely repaired(!) Most oceanfront hotels look fine from the road side, but their front sides are mangled. A huge amount of construction is underway as the hotels race to get opened. For cruisers, most of the typical shore excursions are operating. An exception is the Chankanaab Park, Point Sur and the Dolphin Pens, which are closed.
Even with the damage, we enjoyed Cozumel more in our Janaury 2006 visit than ever before.
