    Destination: Mexican Pyramids

Has anyone cruised to Mexico and seen the pyramids? Did you actually climb them? I have been considering this for a trip and would like to know if you recommend it or not.

The only thing I've really heard about in Mexico is the pyramids. What else is there to do in the ports there?

Elleth, it depends on the port you go to. I can't speak to those on the west coast, but those on the eastern Yucatan have great scuba and snorkeling, and would be great beach ports, if you just want to chill. See what kind of excursions your cruiseline offers at the various ports. You should be able to find information at their websites.

Just do a quick Google search on watersports for Cancun, if you're into that... the pyramids are a good 3 hours away by tour bus( about half of that if you rent a car) from the Maya Riviera and Cancun..and less from Progresso beach.... depending on when you go...it can be very hot and you'd need a guide to get the full history of the Mayans.

When I was at Cozumel last year we took a tour to the Mayan ruins at Tulum on the Yucatan Mainland. The pyramid there is El Castillo, but you can not climb it. I guess you used to be able to, but not anymore. There are so many ruins there beyond just the pyramid. Also there is a private beach area there where you can go swimming.

You can check out some pictures from Tulum here:

Oh, that's too bad that you can't climb the pyramids at Tulum anymore! It was a bit difficult as the steps are really narrow, but I am glad I got to do it. I guess I can understand why they no longer allow it. :-( It was beautiful there.....the views from the cliffs were stunning. It was also a REALLY long bus ride.

We went to ChitchenItza a couple of years ago. You can climb the pyramids there...quite an experience! If you look at my gallery pictures, you'll see some of the sites we saw there....

This is something I'd love to do, but my parents aren't sightseers and probably wouldn't take a cruise to ports like that.

The good thing is that there are other things for them to do in the ports. We went to Costa Maya and took an excursion with an independent company http://www.chacchobenruins.com/ to the ruins, then came back and spent the rest of the day at the beach.

If you can't do it now, they will be around for a long time!
