Safe to drive in Mexico?

I have heard horror stories that a traffic accident for a non-Mexican driver can mean jail time. How can you drive and not fear incarceration in the event of an accident?

Well I'd just get a cab, or if where I was going was close enough, walk. My parents never drive out-of-country. Too much of a risk. The only place we might consider driving in is Canada, eh.

Light, I've driven in Mexico one time many years ago. I don't do it any longer, I guess we aren't adventerous enough anymore. We take taxi's everywhere.

Dark, I drive in Canada all the time too, eh?

Driving in Mexico has never sounded like something I would want to do.

I have driven in Canada when there on business.

I will NOT drive anywhere that has ice/snow on the ground. I have been known to cancel rental cars upoon arrival in a city only to find ice on the ground around the airport.

I don't think it's worth the risk to drive in Mexico or any foreign countries for that matter. Too many potential problems for me.

I think that's smart. I think I might drive in Europe but I'd want someone to get me out of town first

We drove in Mexico a long, long time ago...would not do it now. My daughter and SIL just came back from a cruise from Venice to Civiteveccia (Rome). They picked up a rental car there and drove for a week from Rome back to Venice. They had no problems whatsoever and loved any minute! My son-in-law tends to be a fast driver, but he says he couldn't keep up with the cars there. He says very fast, but safe drivers. They really enjoyed themselves. And, hey, Italians still love us Americans.

I have to share this story. We had friends who were vacationing in Ibiza. They could not rent a car (none available) so they rented a motor bike/scooter. They were having a wonderful time exploring the island and loving the scooter ... until they hit some gravel and crashed. From there on the vacation was a nightmare. He brook his foot and ended up in a foreign hospital. They had to cancel the rest of the vacation and hobble home. I know you can encounter 'problems' even if you aren't driving, but I think you lessen the odds if you DON'T! JMO
