Driving in Cozumel
Our tour guide was a fount of information about Cozumel. He was an American police officer who bought a home and retired in Cozumel after vacationing there for over 20 years.
MOPEDS - He strongly discourages renting a moped. He describes them as death trap waiting to spring, particularly if you are not familiar with the road surfaces. There is gravel, sand, potholes, speed bumps and water on Cozumel roads. Any of these could prove deadly to an inexperienced Moped operator.
CAR RENTALS - He notes that car rental prices have shot up since Hurricane Wilma because of the cost to replace the destroyed vehicles, increased insurance costs, etc. Mexican auto insurance is an absolute MUST. Our guide joked that In San Miguel, most streets are one way except for rental vehicles.
He reminded us that Mexican law is based on the Napoleonic system, where essentially you are guilty until proven innocent. If you are a non-Mexican involved in a collision, it is likely you will spend time in jail. If you are a (foreign) material witness to an accident or a crime, you may spend time in jail until the investigation is completed.
TAXIS - Our guide suggested that if you don't have a local guide, use the extensive taxi services available. The fares are controlled by the government and are actually pretty reasonable. Some bargaining for multi passenger / location fares is expected.
Cozumel is delightful and the citizens are working very hard there to restore their island. You will be amazed at the progress after you view some of the storm pictures found on this website.
