Mexican Currency

My family and I will be taking our first cruise to the Mexican Riviera in June 2007 and we were wondering if shops, vendors and restaurants, at the ports of call, will accept U.S. currency and credit cards. Or will we need to bring pesos with us? We've never been to Mexico before and we want to be prepared before we set sail.

I have cruised to Mexico at least 10 times.
I have never converted any money to pesos.
They accually prefer US Dollars, but not US coins.

What I do is carry a good supply of small bills.
Do not expect to get any change in US money.

We do the same.

Also when we charge something, they will write the amount down on the charge slip in pesos but ask them to also write the amount down in US$ if they don't do it.

Thanks, Blizzard & KK! This is very helpful. Will they also accept Traveler's checks? I don't always like to carry a large sum of cash when I travel.

I seem to remember them taking travelers cheques (my hubby probably drives retailers crazy as he'll get $100 ones and expect change).

Expect to get pesos back.

You can cash your Travelers Checks at the Purser's desk onboard.
Most will take them ashore but they prefer US cash.
