Question Puerto Chiapas, Mexico - how can I get to Palenque ruins from port?

Puerto Chiapas, Mexico appears to be a pretty new port on the sailing circuit. Can anyone who's been there tell me what kind of arrangements are available on shore to get us to the Palenque ruins? I'd hope there are taxi's lurking at the docks waiting to pluck passengers up and whisk them off...? But at what price? What is reasonable, and how far is the journey? What is the likelihood of getting back in time? Are there buses that port passengers over and back well before the ships sail???

We'll be on the Celebrity ship 'Summit'.

    Anxious to hear...
    Many thanks!

Check with the cruisline and see if there is a ship excursion going there!! If it takes awhile, I would go with the ship rather than a cab, cause if it is a ship excursion, and you are late, the ship will wait for you!!
Some people try to turn back their odometers. Not me! I want people to know why I look this way. I've traveled a long way, and some of the roads weren't paved.

I found this and it may help. There is a section on the port and the ruins, if it is correct it is a 4 hour ride each way!!! http://www.lastfrontiers.com/downloads/Mexico.pdf

    Thank YOU Sue,

I"ve been investigating further - and yes, it is at least a 4 hr trip (on a GOOD day). I've even looked into a short flight. So far I am not batting a thousand, dangit. Now if I were wicked rich, I'm sure I could make it there just fine, huh? *cracking up* But sadly that is just not the case.

I think you are right... I'd best wander off to the library or Barnes and Nobel and check out some books on ruins that may be closer. The nearest one - Izapa - is barely worth spending time at (especially since I've spent extensive time at Palenque, Chitzen Itza and Tulum - 30 years ago). Before they became huge tourist destinations actually.

Here's a great link to some photo's of several magnificent standing ruins: Mexico

Anyone with any other good idea's or information regarding Puerto Chiapas would be greatly appreciated. And again, thank you Sue!!!

((According to Celebrity's Excursion people, there are no excursions in the planning stage for Puerto Chiapas Mexico on the Summit cruise in Dec '07, its too far away yet. They don't have any information available - of any kind.))
