Acapulco is barely surviving with domestic tourists, we lost about 18 cruise ships for the remainder of the season. The most important loss was the start of a spanish owned cruise ship that was scheduled to set sail from Acapulco on a weekly basis. We made a very large investment just for this ship, the good news is that the improvements will be used for otther cruise ship turnaround operations.

Liz and I are doing fine, we had a few money related problems due to the decrease of cruise ships and I was caught off guard, didn't foresee the cancellation of ships. We are trying to cut back on many expenses, no more VIP movie theater, nice restaurant dinners, etc.

Before the Flu scare we drove to Puebla for an extended weekend and had a great time.

Here we are at Chlolula

I'm really sorry to hear this because Acapulco is such a great city. But I don't have to tell you that, Roberto. Have they said how long they won't be calling in Acapulco? I heard it is just suppose to be until middle to late June.

Any news when that spanish ship might come back to do the weekly run? That sounds like it could be a great cruise.

You and Liz look so happy!! And I'm assuming that really cute little girl is Eli.

The Ladies and I just got back on Sunday from a RCI Mexican/PNW cruise. We were suppose to go to Cabo, PV, and Mazatlan but because of swine flu, we only got to Cabo and then we went north to San Francisco. Froze our butts off, had to buy raincoats, and it was 55 and raining like crazy. And from SF to San Pedro, the fog was so dense, you couldn't see the water and the fog horn blasted every 10 minutes for 36 hours straight!! Definitely not what we had in mind but we tried to make the best of it.

Then I got home and found this info and it really pissed me off!!

April 25, 2009 12 PM ET
The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) is now recommending that US travelers avoid non-essential travel to Mexico. The recommendation comes after forty cases of swine flu were confirmed in the United States, though all cases in the US so far have been relatively mild, unlike in Mexico where some 150 people have died from the illness.

Royal Caribbean International
Swine Flu Statement

April 27, 2009
Today, we announced we are temporarily suspending our port calls in Mexico. The decision was made in an abundance of caution, and allows additional time to better understand the full impact of the Swine Flu.

Check out the dates on both of those!! The CDC put out their recommendation on the 25th and we didn't board until the Mariner until the 26th.

The CDC announcement came out a full 2 days before RCI decided to do or say anything about it. Then they let us off the ship in Cabo on the 28th, which is a day AFTER they said they were suspending their port calls in Mexico.

Yet Captain Per kept to his "there is nothing to worry about and we will not be altering our itinerary" speech, until AFTER we set sail from Cabo!!

This means that they totally lied to us on the ship!!!!!

And to top it off, when we got home we found out that the future RCI Mexico cruises after ours, the people have been given options. They can either cancel and get a FULL refund or they can stay booked and they will get a $350 OBC and a $350 Future cruise credit. And they will be able to pack the right clothes for the itinerary too.

But RCI has told our sailing that we got to Mexico so they aren't going to give us anything else. All I got out of this crappy cruise was a whopping $75 OBC and another week off work (unpaid) because I came home sick!!!!

Sorry to hear you where on that cruise, i would have preferred that the Captain sailing circles around warmer waters instead of calling cold weather ports, plus, i imagine very little people where prepared for this change in plans.

Luckily it's the end of our regular cruise season, and we expected the spanish ship to sail on low season months, if we look at our numbers; we lost 13 regular calls and the rest is from the spanish cruise ship.

They sent out a letter informing that they will start operations in Spring of 2010.

I am very busy at the office, a ton of work just staring at me, we are re-certifying the port for the ISPS Code, a few audits, Customs regulations amongst other issues. really not in the mood for work today, gonna browse the WWW all day long and just take a lazy day. We have 3 months of very little activity, time that I will use to work out and take care of a few personal matters and try and get ready for the next cruise season.

Question Cliff Divers in Acapulco

Roberto,

We will be your great city on Wednesday, December 16th aboard the Radiance of the Seas.

When I check the web - the time listed for the divers were: 12:45 pm, 7:30 pm, 8:30 pm, 9:30 pm, and 10:30 pm - is that accurate?

Since our ship is only in port from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. - that would mean we would have to see the 12:45 p.m. show - correct?

Tom

Correct, the cliff divers is a must see activity.

You cvan also catch the dives with ship sponsored excursions, you don't necesarily have to take the ship arranged tour. Just look at the departure times and you are set, takie a cab to watch the show.

Question Chartering a sailboat

Roberto,

We will be in Acapulco on Wednesday, December 16th (RCI - Radiance of the Seas). A couple of my friends are interested in chartering a sailboat – they want to go sailing and both are very proficient at sailing.

Any suggestions?

Tom

Very interesting thread. We will be on the Radiance in April for our third visit to Acapulco. We will have our 7 year old niece with us again. Last time in Acapulco with her we visited the Sea Turtle sanctuary. We all learned a lot and we try to support learning for all of us when traveling with her. Roberto any suggestions for our next visit?

I have made many calls and the only person that charters a sailboat ( not America Cup class, but a smaller boat) has his boat rented to a tour operator that wil sell ship tours.

Maybe as the date approaches i may have better luck with the yacht club.
