Yes, that makes sense.
An interesting bit of your history, though.
You asking if Karl I still has descendents here, brought to my mind a very old cousin of ours, who was a straight cousin of my great grand mother's. From time to time, and I still remember it, she would say that the Emperor Karl I of Austria was her cousin. Of course it wasn't true, but it shows the kind of jokes people were telling at the time.
As I have been talking about Monte lately, I thought it was time to explain to you what this Toboggan Ride is all about.
The Toboggan Ride is a 2km downhill run, starting in the suburb of Monte and going all the way to Livramento. It's done while you are comfortably seated in a kind of wicker basket and is controled by two strong men. For a better idea, have a look here: YouTube - Madeira - Monte - The Famous Toboggan Ride..eeeee. The accompanying music is of a very popular folk type here.
You go down a sometimes wide, sometimes narrow road, with bends and all, to make it even more exciting: YouTube - Toboggan Run
The Toboggan Ride runs from 9am till 6pm Mondays to Saturdays and from 9am till 1pm on Sundays, costing 12.50 euros per person. It's closed on Christmas Day, New Year's Day, Good Friday and on the 14th and 15th August due to Monte's popular feast.
Last night was our second Atlantic Festival firework's display.
It was Russia's turn and I must say they managed to synchronize, extremelly well, the fireworks to the music, Italy didn't do it so well.
It appeared to me, though, that Italy had more firework quantity than Russia. Both shows lasted the required 20 minutes, but Russia didn't fill the space so much all the time. However, as they sychronized it so perfectly, it was delightfull to watch.

Look at the number of people who claimed to be or claimed to know the Princess Anastasia!

You're right, those men must be dead tired at the end of the day.
Once I read, in a forum, someone protesting and saying that those men are beeing exploited and so on, but, as long as their rights are taken in consideration, I think they're alright. At least they haven't been complaining.
I have read through this complete thread this morning.
Thank you for sharing your Madeira with us. Your commentary about the different places of your island is quite informative and thanks for the links.
I hope you will continue to write about other areas of Madeira.
Now I have a question for you. If you had to choose from just one, would YOU take the toboggan ride or the cable car? Why?
Will you be attending the Atlantic Festival's third fireworks this evening.

A veteran - whether active duty, retired, national guard or reserve - is someone who, at one point in his or her life, wrote a blank check made payable to "My Country", for an amount of "up to, and including my life." That is honor and courage.
I'm very happy that I have this opportunity to spread the word about Madeira. And I certainly will keep on giving you all an insight of what Madeira has to offer.
Now, Toboggan Ride or Cable Car: My personal answer, and just because I'm not an adventurous kind of person, would be the Cable Car. I did the round trip once and I must say it felt so quiet and peacefull up there.
I never did the Toboggan Ride, so maybe it's not as frightning as it seems. But, to anyone looking for adventure and excitment, I recommend to go ahead and do it.
Yes, I'll be attending the fireworks this evening, today is Germany's turn, speaking of which, it's about to start. Today I'll be watching from my veranda, as my house overlooks the bay.
One of our radio stations transmits the music that's beeing played with the fireworks, so that people looking from afar, can enjoy the whole show. So that's what I'm doing today, music from the radio and me sitting in my veranda.
I'm simply amazed!!!
I just finished watching Germany's fireworks show and I must tell you "it was excellent".
They used unusual music, which lead to unusual firework effects, beautiful!
For me this one is the winner.
Next week is Portugal's turn, but it doesn't enter the competition. It performs only as a closing event.
