Yesterday, August the 21st, was Funchal Day. To celebrate its 501 anniversary, several events were organized by our Municipality.

To set the mood for the festivities, a mandolin concert was held on the eve of the big day.

Yesterday was a fun filled day with activities on the sea, land and air, attracting crowds to town.

All tastes were cathered for with Filarmonic Orchestras playing on the streets, Folk Groups dancing, Parachutte jumps, Hang Gliding and Paragliding landings, an acrobatic show by 2 of our Air force aircrafts, a Vintage cars parade, etc.

At 9:30pm an Historical Parade went on the streets, very interesting I must say, it represented the several happenings Funchal has lived through already.

Two hours later all the festivities were sealed by a beautiful fireworks display, coming up from the sea.

Oh, I would have especially loved the parade of vintage cars. Sounds lilke it was a lovely day.

Yes, it really was and the weather was excellent.

These activities are very good, either for the participants and the viewers alike, as it gives people something to look forward to.

In the public I could see lots of locals as well as tourists.

As we are never, for too long, without a celebration of some kind, last week our minds were centred on wine.

In order to make it possible for a larger number of people to take part in the event, festivities were held on several locations: Funchal, Estreito de Câmara de Lobos and Porto da Cruz.

Grape harvest, wine tasting, grape and wine selling stalls, exhibitions, parades, folk group dancing, musical entertainment....and lots of people to make it all worthwhile.
