    Me, I still love London.

Now that I've been to both, I'd have to say Athens over Rome

While I loved Rome, Athens is truly spectacular!

I agree about loving London also! It's my favorite

    Also easy

Athens have the Akropolis and a few other places but ROME has history all over the city, on ever corner in every street, you are reminded of its greatness
Its pure art, its culture - its pure beauty!!!

Athens or Rome. I have to admit that I would choose Rome. Italy is still my favourite country. And you are right. There is history everywhere you look. There is also a joie de vivre in Rome that I didn't feel in Athens.

GREAT question, Neal! Athens vs Rome is a much harder choice.

The comparison between Venice and Rome was not a fair comparison...it was apples and oranges. It simply boiled down to whether you mainly like looking at beautiful sights or whether you prefer visiting some place which could change the way you think about mankind, history, human behavior, etc.. Athens has a whole different kind of 'wow factor' than Venice. But not everybody wants to think or learn on vacations. Sometimes people just want to see pretty sights. There's nothing wrong with either...but it really is apples and oranges.

But Rome versus Athens is apples and apples.

I'd have to say between Rome and Athens I'd choose Rome. Because of the number of things the Romans did to change the world, and also because the number of things there are to see and do in Rome.

    Oh, and it's prettier, too!

i'm afraid i'm agreeing with T.H.L. on this one . much as i like athens, and the trip to pireaus for the islands, once you've been there 4 or5 times there's no mystery left.
rome on the other hand is eternal and there's much more to see and do....... and as julie says"it's prettier"as well

we live 45minutes from london detest the place with a passion.

I've only been to both places once. I think I need to go back to both 4 or 5 times so I can find out if I agree with smitty!

Looks like I'm in the minority! Having been to both Rome and Athens, for me it's no contest, Athens absolutely!
I'm glad I saw Rome and all the history that goes with it, but I have no desire to return to see more. Actually I thought it was very dirty.Although St Peters was beautiful, I have a problem with all that wealth and the pope telling all Catholics to keep having kids while there are so many poor starving kids all over the world. I couldn't help but think that while there, kinda made me sick.
Athens was awesome with all of it's history. I was in awe of the Acropolis and all. Since we went to Ancient Corinth that day too. we didn't see all of Athens, thus I want to go back to see more.
As far as Italy is concerned, I would rather go back to Florence and Naples/Amalfy coast. JMO
