It's an idea we are tossing around. We will be in Maui in May. Our 1st port is Kahalui and next day we are in Lahaina. Have any of you just stayed on the Island overnight and met up with the ship the next day at the second port?

I suppose it's possible, but make sure you let the crew know you're planning to do it so they don't wait for you to return. They keep track of who gets off and who gets back on. My question is "why would you want to?" You've already paid for your meals and accomodation, so unless you have money to burn it makes little sense. You'd also have to get from Kahului to Lahaina which means the cost of public transportation or renting a car.
The island is not that big....when we have been there on a cruise, we have overnighted in Lahaina, and we've rented a car for both days....you can do whatever you want and make it back to the ship and your room and free food...you do have to park on the street cause there is not much parking next to the ship, but walking is not a problem for us.....wondering why you would not want to return to the ship?

Upcoming cruise:
Avalon Luminary 4/28/12, with time in Amsterdam and Paris before and after
Last April we also rented a car both days.............but we stayed on the ship at night........heck it was paid for![]()
Thanks for all your input everyone. It is just an option we are tossing around at this point. Checking out pros and cons. We were thinking that if we were going to rent a car and go touring about, we wouldn't have to rush back to the ship for departure time on the first day.
If you rent a car for both days, do you have to do 2 separate bookings if you are spending your night on the ship because the first day you are in Kahalui and the next day you are in Lahaina?
Muriel
Good question. I'd check with the rental agency. You may be able to set it up as part of the same rental, but arrange pick up in both areas. I don't imagine this is the first time they've had the question since ships usually call at both areas.
We have this type of itinerary on our cruise in April and we asked about not returning to the ship and they informed us there would be a hefty fine if we did that. They have to account for each and every passenger and even if they know what you want to do it's not allowed. That was Carnival. This is coming froma friend of mine, I did not talk to them personally. But she wanted to stay overnight in Maui so she could get to see a luau, which wasn't going to happen otherwise because of our times in each port.
Also... I read that you can rent a car for a week from one agency and use it from port to port for the one rate. It's worth checking into![]()

Cruising is a wonderful way to enjoy retirement!!
Stopped counting after 110 cruises.
Muriel, what ship line are you cruising with? We had asked the same question because we will be sailing on the Carnival Spirit and will be in Maui April 29 and 30. But, not saying docked. Have to be back on board for sail away 10:30 pm the 29th.
Sailing to Lahaina that night to tender in 8:30 AM the 30th.
I wanted to stay in port (yes, I know it would have incurred hotel charges.) but, there was so much I wanted to do that we can no longer do because of the port change. I wanted to do sunrise at the top of the mountain and we would have to leave at 2:30 AM for that.
As Cruisin Angel told you in a prior post, we were told NO WAY!!
We did have to book 2 separate car rentals because of changing ports...where the heck would we put the car for the night and how would we get back for it. Worse part was, we had to use two different rental companies. The first port car rental is with Thrifty and they don't have a rental agency in Lahainia. The closest one would have been at the airport and that's an hour away from Lahiania.
