    Maui Question

Has anyone done the bike thing off the mountain? The one where they bus you to the top and you ride (coast) bikes back down? Approximately how long does the ride down take? I heard it's about 37 miles.

We are booked on a Hawaii cruise in March and have booked this tour with Bike Maui. They will pick us up at the port at 3:00 and take us up 10,023 feet to the top of the crater to watch the sun set. Then we are biking down (38 miles). I'm not sure how long it takes, but they say you 'coast' at 20 miles per hour. We are going to stop mid-way down for breakfast, so I'm assuming it's going to take hours. My niece has done this and said it is a 'must'!

I do believe you mean "sunrise" not sunset! That is a long day ---your tour says you will be back to the ship about 4PM. Hope you have a grand time! I've been to Haleakala (not biking) and it is like the Martian landscape! Beautiful!

Thanks all, we are back. We didn't do the bikes, we just drove up. It was sensational! It was so awesome being that far above the clouds. I just loved it.

Ok, so we just got back from Hawaii and I must say that this trip was great. The top of the mountain looked like a little piece of heaven----the clouds looked as if you could just reach out and touch them. And then the sun rose and it was spectacular. The bike company then takes you to a staging area where they give you your bike, gear and a map and you're off. We used Haleakala Bike Co so it was an unguided tour down the 28 miles. We did stop for a great breakfast at the Lodge (great views!) and got back to the bike shop around 10:00 am. I will say that there are very windy curves and you go anywhere from 20-30 MPH depending on your weight (the heavier you are, the faster you go) so you use your brakes quite a bit. It was alot of fun, but a bit scary! But I would do it again!
