    Martinique -- Your Opinion

If you wish, please give your reasons. They could be helpful to those who have never been ... but, are considering going.

Voted No Strong Opinion either way!

We've normally had a rather good time there but would not go out of our way to return ....

We have been there several times. It's okay.

The first few times we were there we docked where it was only a short walk to town.

The last time we were there in 2007 we docked at the new pier which is not near the town. Since we had a tour -- which I wrote about in this area of the site -- I didn't have a chance to check to see if there was a free shuttle to town.

We will be there again in 2009 -- know that we will be at this new pier which is near nothing!!

We have been twice, the second time had a taxi ride around a very nice island, would recommend a tour of the island.

First time we went we saw what looked like a ferry entering the harbour near the town, on inspection it was Marco Polo.

It was a Sunday, nothing open so we walked around the town, had a rest by the lovely Cathedral and witnessed ladies entering the Cathedral wearing true Caribbean finery. Colours of dresses were magnificent, this we watched for over 30 minutes, and something I always think about when hearing Martinique mentioned. If not in shorts would have joined them inside.

Both times we were there French Brandy was really cheap.

As I have said we enjoyed the island

We've just returned from 2 Caribbean cruises totalling 16 days, and Martinique was our favourite port of them all. We very seldom take ship excursions, but Martinique Tourism was totally useless at helping us with independent operators, so we booked the Land & Sea tour.It was fabulous! Motorcoach from Fort-de-France to St. Pierre and return by boat. We're thinking about returning for a land stay of a week - the combination of a huge variety of scenery and a unique culture are the attractions for us (though refreshing our high-school French courses would be necessary to really enjoy it).
