Maasdam Misses Charlottetown due to Weather

The huge Holland America cruise ship Maasdam is taking a pass on Charlottetown today because of gusty winds which are expected to strengthen as the day progresses.

The large vessel, with almost 2,000 passengers and crew aboard, was scheduled to dock at 8 a.m. and depart at 5 p.m.

But winds are forecast to approach 80 km/h in gusts this afternoon which might make docking treacherous for the Maasdam which sailed past the P.E.I. capital this morning towards its next port of call.

The cancellation will disappoint tourist operators and retail outlets in the city and area which get a boost in business each time a cruise ship docks on the city’s waterfront.

The vessel is scheduled to dock in Charlottetown again June 23.

That's too bad that the Maasdam is missing Charlottetown -- that is a wonderful port.

But the Maasdam is not a huge ship. She is an S class ship -- 55,575 gross tons.

    Passengers -- 1258.
